If your reading this, your probably one of those individuals chomping at the bit to tell me what to play, and hey that's just the kinds input I'm looking for.

I haven't played Fantasy since Undead were just Undead, none of those pesky Khemri or Vampire Counts muckning around in my day.

A few of my frineds have taken a renewed interest in fantasy, and I've just been itching for an excuse to get my hands on the Ogre Kingdom models. Today I bit the bullet and ordered 2 battallions, a butcher, Battle for Stone Pass, and the Ogre Ninja. I figured everything but the ninja was good place to start, and that I wanted the Ogre Ninja whether I ever played him or not. I mean come on, he's a freakin OGRE NINJA for Pete's sake!!!

Roughly that gives me
12 Bulls
8 Iron Guts
8 Lead Belchers
48 Gnoblars
1 Butcher
1 Maneater

I figured I'd convert one of the Bulls into a Bruiser for my army general, and the Butcher comes with enough extra swag that I convert another Butcher from the ranks of the bulls as well.

Then I realised, that I don't even know what point value of army I should be working on.
What is the standard army of the day ?
Is it 1850 like this years GT ? I don't know, and definitely use some help there.

My Gut Feeling after reading the army book is this.

1 Bruiser (Army General)
2 Butchers (Need some magic)
1 Bulls regiment (because it's compulsary) was thinking 4 strong with armor and 2 hand weapons
1 Iron Guts Regiment 8+ Strong (If I can convert more bulls into Iron Guts, I'm doing it)
1-2 Regiments of Gnoblars - They are cheap, they can screen, and WTH am I going to do the 48 of them otherwise ? ?

and that's about as far as I got...

I read through some of the strategy threads here and I got the impression that Yhette and Gorgers are a sound investment and I know that I want to get my hands on as many Iron Guts as I can.

Aside from that anyone have any suggestions for a newly crowned Ogre Tyrant ?

Ogres tend to work best with the MSU approach (multiple small units.) This means units 3-4 models strong. Stick to Ironguts as the mainstay of your army, as kitted out Bulls cost about 43 points, while Ironguts hit alot harder and are only 5pts more. Naked 3 man bull units make great flanking/bait units, though.

If you do adopt the MSU approach, avoid taking expensive standards. MSU is a little riskier than traditional ranked up blocks, and losing a banner means giving away 100 VPs. Most of your combat resolution points will come from kills, anyway.

Most tournaments play at 2000pts so that you can field a Lord choice. A Tyrant (possibly with Kineater) is almost mandatory since Ogres Panic rather easily from shooting/magic. Popular builds for the Tyrant are either

Tenderiser, Wyrdstone, Fistul of Laurels
or
Siege Breaker, Wyrdstone, Kineater

I would suggest at least 2 Butchers and maybe a Bruiser BSB or even a third Butcher for some heavy magic.

The Gnoblars are great for catpuring quarters and "counter deploying" (deploying your cheap, useless units first without revealing where your real meat is going to be.)

Your main problem will be shooty armies. I would suggest Gorgers or Yhetees to counter them. I personnaly am a fan of Rhinox cav too, since they hit like a ton of bricks and attract alot of fire. Hope that helps!

Thanks for taking the time to write such an insightfull reply.

I've heard mention of Rhinox Cav on the boards here, but they aren't in the army book. Where can I find rules for the Rhinox Cav ?

You should check with your local gaming group/store about using Rhinox cav, though. They are legal in the Canadian HoH tournament league, but since they are a WD article not all venues may allow their use. Don't be shy about asking more questions!

always ask your opp. before you field rhinox riders, my lone thunderlord was vetoed in a game last friday :(

anyways, ogres are very fun. i dont run the MSU army, i like my blocks to be larger, 6 for bulls, 4 for irongutz. each bull block gets a butcher, my tyrant pals around with maneaters tio get that lovely stubborn ability. im also severly partial to the tenderizer, it has to be one of my favorite weapons in the game.

Thank you for your input.

I picked up another box of Iron Guts, and decided to build a 2000 point army.

1 Tryant
3 Butchers
12 Iron Guts - don't know what size regiments I'm going to field, but I'm goingto field all of them.
3 Bulls - Compulsary
50 Gnoblars - in 2 units, heck it's only 100 points
Manhunters - I have the Ninja Ogre, and was considering converting the extra bulls I have into Ninja Ogres as well
Gorger - I just like the idea of a Gorger popping in on the other side of the board to harrass warmachines and such

I figure I can put the butchers in with the Iron Guts and have the tryant hang out with the maneaters.

This gives me the oppurtunity to make the Tyrant and maneaters look like a regiment of Ogres who serverd in Cathay

What so you think ?

heres a good tip. multiple small units. feild the ironguts in units of 3 or 4 so you can have as many units as possible supporting eachother. the gnoblars are a great thing to since they will screen the more expensive ogres.

SM- Lets roll to see who goes first
Nob- Urgh...ok, I got a 6
SM- Oops, looks like I got an 8, so I go first
Nob- You got a 8 on a 6 sided die?
SM- Um, yep.
Nob- Space marines.....

You can do some good things with that list of models. Here's a basic skeleton of MSU min/maxing:

1x Tyrant - 100 points of stuff = 300
3x Butchers - 50 points of stuff each = 180x3 = 540
4x 3 Ironguts - bellower = 154x4 = 616
1x 3 Bulls - bellower = 115
2x 20 Gnoblar Fighters = 40 x2 = 80
1x 8 Gnoblar Trappers = 48
1x Maneater - great weapon, heavy armor = 90
1x Gorger = 75

That gets you to 1864, more or less. Converting another maneater would be a good idea, that's another 90 points, and with the handful of points left I'd get a couple standards to give the guts a boost.

I'm a big fan of mawseeker + jade lion + magic weapon on tyrants. T6 is big time. Most people take the Big T on their tyrant, but I think I'll rock siegebreaker still unless I'm up against someone who deserves the cheese - Vamps, for example

Good butcher items you should sprinkle in: bangstick, skull mantle, dispel scrolls, and some take siegebreaker on a butcher to make him properly killy.

I think this list looks like what I will start with.
Originallly I was a little worried about only having 3-4 units, but using MSU like this gives me 8 units, plus solos running around.

I'm going to have to hit them hard and fast with the ogres and screen unwanted chages with the cannon fodder Gnoblars.

LOL, the only problem I see with all this is I'll now have to paint more Gnoblars than Ogres
