Back in 2001 GW published a high-quality collection of Jes Goodwin's concept art for GW. Today it's out of print and goes for $100-500 on Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Gothic-Eldritch-Jes-Goodwin/dp/1841541486/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205053549&sr=8-1

Not worth that kind of scratch but it's pretty decent.

Most of the art was already published in various books though it's nice to have in one place. The exciting stuff is some concept art that was never pursued. We were just talking about what sort of miniatures people would like to have and Imperial cultists/civilians came up a lot. As it happens Jes gives us 2 pages of Administrum uniforms.

Apologies for the quality of the scan, even on greyscale my scanner didn't get 100% clear images. You can see embigenable ones in my photodump thread

Now we'll see plastic pratorians and codex squats before GW ever makes these guys but hey... wonder if my tailor could whip up a set of robes...

There's also a 1990 sketch of Mk8 marine armor

bits of it have been used but it's kind of neat to see a clearner, more sci-fi looking marine armor.

The angry washing machine is a model I've always hated, but I kind of like the concept sketch in the upper right.

The angry depressurization chamber looks a lot better, I think it's the longer legs.

Did these skaven ever get made?

That's what 40k cultists should look like.

Lest we forget, Jes basically created the craftworld eldar.

Not too sure how I feel about the jacket-wearing pilots but the rest are still the templates for all eldar models.
Almost makes me forget how much I hate them, HATE THEM ALL.

Titan crew

A good mix of steam punk and gothic but still looks like a practical uniform.

Navy officers

Yeah, I'd probably buy them.

And crew

For these models I'd start a new army.

Robots

These were going to update the original RT era bots but were never made.

Titans

Goodwin created the reaver and warhounds that GW still has in production today.

Guard

This is what plastic trenchcoat guard or storm troopers should look like. I think they made one of these, once. it was an armless titan crew guy, I'd start a new army for them.

Finally early Necromunda, back when it was called Confrontation

The theme then was rich 'brat gangs' vs workers and underhivers. I think that would ahve been a lot more interesting than the game they did do where jean jacket guys fought trenchcoat guys. But that's just me.

Hope you enjoyed.

It's kind of funny that the rat men that would be Hrud are actually labeled "skaven" in the concept art. A lot of that is very cool, especially the dreadnoughts, robots, and IG stuff. And I agree that the cleaner Mk8 armor is cool. I kind of wish they had done that, just because it would give the Mk8 suits a bit more of an updated look. As it is, they just blend in with all the others.

I love the pics of the Robots(The men of iron?)

By the 37 keys of Tzeentch,We open the way for our brothers,
By the 1000 whispers of Slaanesh we call to them,
By the 12 plagues of Nurgle we fell their enemies,
And by the mighty axe of Khorne we cut open the world for them!

That is a cool looking Warlock.

I hope they pay that guy what he's worth. Looks like his artwork virtually single handedly created 40k.

It really is an amazing book. It's got my favorite picture of the Adeptus Mechanicus ever. I'm glad I got mine when the getting was good.

I also have this book. My favourite pic is the "battle inquisitor" on one of the first pages. Along with Inquis Exterminatus it's probably one of my favourite BL publications, and I got it for £10.

I'm not sure how accurate your statement of "goes for $100-500 on Amazon" is though. Do people actually pay these prices? I always thought the sellers are just chancers trying to cash in, and that hardly any of them manage to get the prices they ask. Ebay is a far more accurate benchmark for ascertaining the value of these oop books. As always, I could be wrong.

It is one of my favorite GW artbooks. I really enjoyed seeing a lot of concept artwork and then being translated into the miniatures. IMO, Jes is the definitive artist for the 40K universe.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

What's more, there are still current Warlock models that are basically 100% faithful translations of that drawing into 3D minis. I don't imagine a new look will ever be needed, come to think of it. It's just that good.

Someone fairly recently did some Guard conversions that, while they weren't labelled as such, are basically those Imperial crew. I'll see if I can find the WD it was in.

The upper right concept sketch resembles the old plastic Epic dreadnought.

I'm afraid that Goodwin's Warhounds were replaced when Epic Armageddon came out. Too bad. His Reaver (best Imperial Titan, IMO) is still in production, along with his lovely Phantom Titan, both from "back in the day."

This looks like an awesome book. I'll add it to my list of "Must Have" OP GW books.

Good point but I don't feel like doing that search. Anyone know what it really has sold for?

Again I don't recommend paying more than cover price, but at coverprice it's worth it.

Was this the book that had some pages on thin overlays? i remember thinking it was an expensive art-book when it came out. I think it would be cheap if they rereleased it at the same price now.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Yep, the thin overlays are very cool.

I love the Navy officers pics and had forgotten about the Eldar Assassin. Jes's Guard really are what they should go for when they do greatcoat guard. I would buy up a ton of them.

And just as a clarification re: the Skaven, the book includes art for Fantasy as well as 40k, so it's not like Jes drew these Skaven to be Space Skaven.

I know I was surprised recently when I saw what folks wanted for it on Amazon (granted there's also a seller on Amazon that wants $75 for a copy of Guns of Tanith). Recent attempts by someone to sell a copy on Ebay received bids of $51 in February and $36 earlier this month, neither making the seller's reserve. So, is it worth $100? Doesn't look like it to me.

But I'll tell you when I cleaned out all my 40k stuff previously, this was one of the few pieces I kept. It's an incredible book for it's artwork alone, but also for seeing Jes's contribution to the history of WHFB and 40K.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

DBM, look at the tubing, look at the masks, look at the pouches. If those aren't meant to be Space Skaven, they're really anachronistic WHFB Skaven.

Ah yes, tegeus is right about those particular skaven - those the the designs for the skaven when they were being considered for 40k. On the preceeding page are a bunch of sketches for fantasy skaven, so I can see where the confusion would come from.

Games Workshop owes everything to Jes and the original creator of the Space marine powered-armor suit. Whatever those two artists have been paid will never really be enough.

Kid Kyoto- Don't you have a deinterlace/de-interpolation setting on your scanner? It's been the better part of a decade since I owned a scanner, but your scans are showing artifacts that should go away if you find that checkbox.

Looks like part of the problem is Dakka's shrinking them, the full size versions are much clearer.
