take a savage orc boss with martog's best basha with bigged' big kickin boots and stick him in a unit of savage orcs or better savage orc boar boyz and watch how destructive he will be (it would also be a good idea to give him a shield that will give him a 3+ armor save in combat and a 6+ ward save).

Well I plan on using him as a loner....runing him in behind some throw away units... to get him to charge a flank. so the best is a savage orc you say.

I was thinking black orc boss on boar w/ enchanted shield, battle sword, and talisman of protection.

I'll assume you talk about warbosses here.

I like the Black orc due to good weaponskill (who can hit even most other heroes on a 3+), and the immunity to animosity due beatings is pretty handy also, altough I'd keep him in a large unit because of that. Unfortunately the armed to da teef goes waste on him but that's not too bad. There are lot's of good ways to arm this fellow, here's couple of nice selections of magic items:

Character Killer (sort of): Boar, Heavy Armor, Ulag Akk'rit Axe, Iron Gnashas, Best Big Boss At,Enchanted Shield
This fellow can go toe to toe with most us1-2 targets and try to beat them down with to-hit rerolls and a chance for the killing blow. He's also very durable with the 1+ save and 5+ ward save.

R'n'F Mower: Boar, Heavy Armor, Shield, Ulag Akk'rit Axe, Kicking Boots, Collar of Zorga
This guy opts for the maximum amount of attacks. He also has the insurance against monsters and such with the collar which is very good item as it costs only 5 points (you should always take it on the general if you don't wanna take the other talismans instead). With lessened durability (2+ save is still ok) comes less steep pricetag.

BTW. If you ment big bosses, the same bonuses of black orcs, about which I talk next, apply also. Obviously you can't get so many items for these guys but they'll make good supporting heroes (or generals in smaller games). Heavy armor and a shield are must and either a boss with Best Basha + Big Boss At or Akk'rit Axe + Enchanted Shield + Collar makes durable and hitty character.
