Hi everyone, I'm brand new to Dakka Dakka, but have spent the last several hours (of would-be revision time) reading some awesome material. I found the site looking for SM battle reports and have since read AgeOfEgo's fantastic battle rep. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/210359.page Also, I can't say how much I love grey_deaths painting blogs!
Anyway, to the matter at hand!

I started painting this dread this easter, having been away from the hobby for a few years, I just felt like giving it a go. I was surprised that enough of my paints had survived the usual drying up enough that I could get a fair bit done. I consider myself a decent table-top standard painter, so the first thing to ask is whaddya think?
The second is where to go with this colour scheme. I stole the model of my mate, who is awful at buying massive armies, painting maybe 20 models badly and then getting another. He went for black templars and so that was where I started - black. The left arm is complete as is most of the torso. I've left the right arm atm, as this maybe where I splash some colour.
I have some ideas about combining a bright blue aspect to the model, and wanted to avoid the black+red look that is very popular with many schemes. Any tips or examples in that regard would be extremely helpful. I've also thought about black and green (?) but that sounds a little chaotic (?).

I'm thinking up fluff for the army and if I pass my exams coming up I may reward myself with the battle force and get some marines painted up.

Daylight a little bright here, sorry!

I like the battle damage from the side view especially the blood.

The back part remains unpainted as of yet. Annoyingly the model came in pretty bad shape in terms of mould lines and, you can't see from these shots, some awful glueing. Looking at the pic now, the exhausts look a bit with those mould lines.
What do people think of the black paint work, is it any good? Too harsh, not enough?

I think the black looks good - first pic is hard to tell, but second pic shows it alot better. Good highlighting on the sarcophagus.

My only petty gripe would be the blood - personally, I don't like the "arterial red" look many people use to paint blood, though I can see why you'd go that route. Blood, in large amounts, fresh, is usually a lot darker (brown/black) with a eensy weensy bit of red where the light hits it.

Some white areas might break up the black - I'm not sure about bright blue, and definitely not green. White sections would allow you to add weathering and battle damage (nice gouges, btw), and it'd also be another contrating area for any blood effects you might want to try. Ever used the 'toothbrush flick' trick for blood effects?

I'd put some metallic details on the reactor and hydraulics for sure. I like the blood on the fist, it might be abit bright but defintly gets the point across .

Your detail work looks good, and yes the scratch marks are very cool. I may hafta do that to my next dread. those things are a blast to paint!

Cheers Jay. I've not tried the toothbrush flick. I wasn't very happy with the 'splatter' I went for (using my dry brush). Also thanks for the tip on the blood. I know what you mean and I'm kinda tempted just to redo that whole fist. I think theres a bit TOO much blood anyhow. I'm concerned re-doing it would just remove all detail though.
Also, re: your comments about the blue. Basically I saw some awesome imperial castellans, and wanted to put blue in my colour scheme, but with black. Though, that would involve adding quite a lot of blue, especially to the torso. I actually might start a post just to ask whether people think that would work. I wish I had a marine with me atm, so i could test. I'm limited to that crummy marine painter on the GW website.

And thanks everyone for the comments about my gouges
