Given the ephemeral nature of these magazines, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to turn this review into an actual article or just a post. They're relevant only for a little while, but not quite so interesting further down the line. I suppose someone in the future might want to access the magazines to find interesting color schemes and IKRPG material, but please: people buy No Quarter to get rules previews.
Fire in the Hole
According to the editors, this is the last No Quarter preview for Warmachine Legends, and the back pages hint that we'll be looking at Warlock previews for Hordes: Metamorphosis. I imagine with Legends being released in August, No Quarter is shifting attention to Hordes to give players something to chew their fangs on. That's okay by me as I make sure to collect stuff from both game systems.
Bosun's Call
I only mention the letter portion of the page because they refer back to the "hate" mail I wrote them that appeared in No Quarter 16.
That, and there's a totally cool picture of people at Templecon demoing Warmachine in a hotel elevator.
News from the Front
If you try to attend every summer convention that has an official
PP presence, then page 5 is for you. They have events listed for Origins, GenCon and PAX. Highlights include a 1500pt. War! event at Origins in June (standard battle sizes are 500 and 750pts for you non-
WM players), the split Masters events at GenCon that replaces Nationals (500pts the first day, 750pts the second day and 1000pts. on Sunday), and the PAX invitational for the Pacific Northwest.
It's also the first time I'd heard of the Collinsville, IL convention Diecon from May 30th to June 1st and GenCon OZ in July.

Portents of the Divine by Douglas Seacat
Douglas Seacat gives us a contemplative story of Primarch Arius, the head of the Morrowan faith. As a leader, he is tired, weary, and much relied upon by King Leto. It's a dangerous position to be a religious leader involved in politics, and the story opens the way to Legends by setting things in motion that crosses the borders of nations and races.
It starts with a dream, and he wakes up to a vision, both of which lead him to try to convince the Empress of Vanya to permit Precursor Knights onto her soil to help the Nyss.
The coolest thing about the vision? The last time they had one with similar portents was pre-Orgoth.
Yep. It sounds like a great preview for Legends.
Legends on the Charge
These new dragoons are not like the Drakhun. These are field commander type Dragoons that benefit from and provide benefits for units on the field. The tactical descriptions for each Dragoon mention both tactical options for the Dragoon while fielded with the appropriate unit and options as highly mobile solos. All four dragoons (yes, the mercenary character cavalry model is NOT a dragoon) have dismount included automatically. There is no option to pay for the ability to dismount.
Magnus Agenda Changes
Adds Orin Midwinter, Idrians, and Steelheads (PURE EVIL!)
Major Katherine Laddermore
Not sure how she plays (not used to Cygnar), but the mag suggests going after easy to hit targets to arc multiple lightnings onto high
DEF targets. Probably her best ability is the one that makes the Storm Lances more maneuverable as they can run through each other and such.
High Exemplar Gravus
Yay, more death effects. (He gains tokens from exemplar deaths) Gravus seems like a veritable troop smasher. Constant reach, tokens for boosting and buying attacks, AND abilities that protect him from harm (death tokens for each ability)? He's not frontline, but I can see saving him to hit a low
DEF target with an inspiring charge and boosting the Exemplar Vengers to
SPD +5 for a devastating charge on key models. I think the boosted attack rolls apply to impact hits as well!
Fenris
Fenris is a Doom Reaver on a horse. But more than that, his special commander ability only applies to Doom Reavers and prevents them from berserking on models in their unit. He can charge over rough terrain and obstacles, but it doesn't say he can move with no penalty, so it's charge or move at half
SPD. After charging from 11" away, though, Fenris can kill a model with two reach weapons. The first time he kills an enemy model he howls and causes enemies in his
CMD to take a fear check and allows Doom Reavers to move 3".
It makes me want to build Butcher armies just so that I can field Fenris and two units of Doom Reavers.
Darragh Wrathe
Shadow Rider makes Darragh Wrathe move like Light Cavalry, and he confers that ability to Soul Hunter Units in the army. On top of that, he can give orders to undead units, and living cryx units can use his
CMD stat (9!). He even has a spell list of Hellfire, a spell that debuffs living enemy models'
CMD stat, and a spell that allows undead Cryx models in his
CMD range to move 1".
I seriously want to buy him just to make Soul Hunters fiercely more mobile than they are already.
Horgenhold Forge Guard
They don't work for Cryx or Khador.
These squats, I mean Rhulic soldiers, can forma Defensive line for +2
ARM, attack through each other, get attack buffs when other models in the unit are engaged, are weapon masters, and get critical slams. But they're slow.
SPD 4 slow. It might be fun to include them as hirelings for my Protectorate army, but the
SPD is a definite issue.
Steelhead Heavy Cavalry
Will work for any faction
They can charge and fire (ASSAULT), flank, brutal charge and backswing. Flanking gives them +2 to attack rolls when they attack a model within range of a Halberdier. It seems situational and odd to tie down a fast moving unit to the halberdiers, but since it just says melee attack, I'm thinking you'll end up running the halberdiers up to engage a model, and then charge through key lines and hit with impact attacks at +2 to hit. Their Backswing is a *action and so isonly useful once they're stuck.
Anastasia di Bray
She works for Cygnar and the Protectorate.
She's a dagger wielding spy with lots of fancy rules that mess with deployment and movement. She can deploy 16" beyond her deployment zone (26"!), and enemy
AD models can't deploy within 7" of her. In order for this to work you need to deploy first, so it's a good thing she gives you a +1 to the starting first roll. She can effectively deny a good portion of the board in this way. On top of that, she gets to move before the game starts, and so you can put her forward for denial then retreat her to safety.
You might not want to keep her back. If she can survive ending her activation within 6" of an enemy warcaster/warlock (stealth might help, and acrobatics will help her position better), she learns a secret. If she can end her next activation in
CMD range of a friendly warcaster, then friendly models within the warcaster's
CMD range can move their
SPD in inches.
She'll be fun to use in a denial Protectorate of Menoth list or with Daughters of the Flame. Counter-
AD will give the usually slow moving Protectorate of Menother army a nice pushback. Of course, this is canceled out by an enemy Astasia or a non-
AD army, but it's a nice option to have.
Orin Midwinter
He works for Khador, Protectorate, Cryx AND Skorne (!)
Orin's a spellcaster solo that gains additional damage die on models with upkeeps. You won't want to use his staff for this, but his Lightning Stroke spell. Since it chains lightning to d3 models, if they have an upkeep spell on them then those damage rolls get boosted, too. I think the additional die cancels out things like Protection of Menoth bonuses and Arcane Shield.
But his best stuff might be his Null Magic spell that blocks magic within 12", friendly or enemy. His staff gives him power tokens like nemo when enemies cast spells within 12" of him, and he uses those to boost attack/damage rolls. In conjunction with lightning strokes, and enemies with upkeep spells, he can bounce lightning around and hit targets for
4d6. Not bad, but he's going to get squished trying to pull it off.
Stannis Brocker
The steelhead cavalry commander looks impossible in the artwork. I feel like his back's going to break when he brings the sword back that far. I'm not sure how they do the artwork, but the style in the magazine looks different from the cover art slightly.
Brocker can forefend, which is kind of funny imagining him doing that when the cavalry can't.
He can give an order to Steelheads to charge at
SPD +5 over rough terrain, though they still get movement penalties. And with Brocker as the Steelhead Tactician steelheads and Brocker can go through each other and all that jazz. Combine that with Steelhead Cavalry flanking and the magnus agenda allowing for steelheads, and you have a nasty maneuverable force that can hold you down and beat you up.
Thor Steinhammer
He works for Cygnar and Khador
He's a combat mechanik, so after he repairs jacks or buffs them (his ability Tune Up gives rhulic warjacks boosted attack or damage rolls for a turn) he can move away. His jack marshal drive ability means that his rhulic marshalled jacks can gain +3" of movement.
His blowtorch is both a gun and a melee weapon. (Hello Burna boyz)
The Gamers' Journal Part 2
They move things up to 500 pts. The LEgion of Everblight army has that nice blue tint added to Warmongers, Gudrun and incubi. The Cryx army adds a deathjack (well painted, but nothing really of note aside from the fact that it's based on a wreck marker). The skorne adds a NASTY looking agonizer. And the Privateers continues to have more converted models with that neat blue tinge (I like the color blue).
Painting Articles
The first one is for Gravus and the second is for the Nephilim.
Alternate Sculpt Challenge
If you paint an alternate sculpt model by July 1, you could win 50 bucks.
Skorne Tactica
The article provides a good basis for building skorne armies which include basic skorne tips and tips for warlock specific armies. I found it really useful in helping me decide to pick up a Titan Canonneer for my Aaptimus Zaal army while I was at the shop. The tactica includes cute pictures of models with stylized text laid onto the shot to show you the length of a charge (for example) and a funny picture of an agonizer out in the open as bait.
The Gavyn Kyle Files: Asphyxious
The files focus on Asphyxious. I don't know if they really reveal anything new about him (I'm not too well versed on all the background in the game). My favorite part is the one that talks about how people took time to realize they were fighting the same Cryxian commanders over years of war. Undeath is funny.
The Pendrake Encounters: The Slag TRoll
Sorry, I didn't really look at it.
Monsterpocalypse Preview
If you have the Internet, you've seen these too. The Lords of Cthul (Cthulu faction preview) and Shadow Sun Syndicate (Ninjas!)
Guts & Gears
estroyer
The one disappointment with this article was that they didn't have alternate paint schemes. I liked seeing them for other armies. They only show one this issue with a white-painted Desrtoyer and a guide to painting the destroyer.
