If so, what are the advantages/disadvantages? What kinds of tips tricks do you have
to offer for taking pics of minis outside?

The Perry Brothers' site has a section on how they take pictures in their garden:
http://www.perry-miniatures.com and look at "picture creation" in the menu.
Hope this helps.

Thanks.
Now while that may work with well painted armies, how
badly will the full light of day make sloppily painted armies

I think one of the problems with direct sunlight is that it creates too much contrast on subtle blending/color changes. I could be biased though due to a faulty digital camera. that is why I'd rather use diffused light. Using a lightbox with an opaque material to spread and dilute the amount of light helps because it is not as intense.

What about pics in the shade or on an overcast day?

I took most of the pictures in my two army profile articles outside.
I can't ever seem to get my white-balance right when I take pictures indoors, my stuff all looks too blueish.
I didn't do anything special - dunno if I should have or not.

outside on an overcast day, or out of direct sunlight on a sunny day, works great. But be prepared for photos taken on different days to look different - the big advantage of inside photography with artificial lighting is consistency

I tried it today. It was slightly overcast and you can see
the results in my Vow thread.
