Ok, I've got a small fantasy tourney coming up in a couple of weeks. Below I've pasted my army list I don't include points to avoid violating any rules, but it adds up to 996.
I'm not really all that happy with it. What the heck should I do to get more punch in this list? Anyone feel free to comment.

Heroes:

Vampire:
Dark Acolyte
Lord of the Dead
Flayed Hauberk
Sword of Battle

Necromancer
(Invocation)
Raise Dead
Vanhel's Danse
Corpse Cart
Unholy Loadstone

Core:

Skeletons x 15
Full Command
Banner of the
Dead Legion

Skeletons x 15
Full Command

Ghouls x 10
Ghast

Dire Wolves x 7

Rare:

Varghulf

Total: 996
Should I switch the flayed hauberk and sword of battle for a bloody hauberk?

Less than 2000 is difficult for VC by all accounts. I've never played VC, but I planned one for a while and read up on their tactics pretty well. So take this with a grain of salt, but the thing I notice is that you're pretty much completely relying on outnumbering and static CR, since you have nothing that's particularily killy but the vamp and vargulf, and only the vargulf is maneouverable (particularily since you've got only a small chance of getting Vanhels on the vamp).

The list I was looking at building for 1000 VC was this:

Vamp w/Master of the Dark Arts, Book of Arkhan, Sword of Battle, Steed

Necro w/IoN, Danse, Black Periapt

Ghoul x20 w/Ghast

Ghoul x20 w/Ghast

Black Knights x5 w/champ, standard, Banner of the Barrows

Vargulf

That gives 5-7 PD, and 3-5 DD, two large anvils and two fast and reasonably hitty hammers.

I don't like to give people advice, seeing as my armies are always tactically flawed, but here goes.
Your Vampire looks great, but with Lord of the Dead I think he should join a large Skeleton unit. If you replace his Sword of Battle with a Tomb Blade, then with each person he kills in combat he gains back a free Skellie. I wouldn't recommend a Necromancer as they are very easy to kill, and a Corpse Cart won't do much. If you took out the Raise Dead and Vanhel's Danse, then that's 30 points you can use to grant him something like a much-needed Power Stone, seeing as he's only a Level 1 Wizard. I think the unit without the magic banner should be a unit of 20, and then join up with the Vampire. The other unit needs the extra unit strength seeing as they don't have the help of a Vampire. If you give them spears, then they have more attacks, especially as in the Magic and Combat phase the Vampire can bring them back. I think it should be like this:

Heroes:
Vampire:
Dark Acolyte
Lord of the Dead
Flayed Hauberk
Tomb Blade

Necromancer:
Invocation
Corpse Cart
Balefire
Power Stone

Core:
20 Skeletons
Spears
Full Command

15 Skeletons
Spears
Full Command
Banner of the Dead Legion

10 Ghouls
Ghast

Rare:
Varghulf

The total is 993.

The unit of 20 is the hard hitting unit. You Vampire just keeps bringing them back up, so they should be fine. The Necromancer stays on his own, with a Bound Spell and Power Stone. The 15 Skellies and 10 Ghouls are support units, try to get them in a flankn or rear charge, and the Varghulf gives off some pure muscle.
