Here's my take on the forgeworld lovelies so far. still got 2 squad to go, a guo to make, a soul grinder to turn in to a defiler (complete with belly gun) and maybe an fw dread:

whole army so far -

typhus -

terminators

squad 1

squad 2

nurglings ('lesser daemons')

the method used (except for Typhus & the nurglings) -
undercoat with grey car primer (for uk users - from Halford's)
base coat of rotting flesh
dipped in quick drying wood stain - light oak - from wilkinsons
coat of thraka grenn ink
coat of develan mud ink
brazen brass washed with a mix of the old green & brown inks. this was left to dry then a wash of vile green and finally a dry brush of brass to blend down the vile green.
bleached bone washed with a mix of the old brown & yellow inks
rusty metal (not finished on the marines) - dark flesh base coat, then vermin fur & blazing orange then a dry brush of bolt gun metal then flecks of bolt gun metal painted on.
the models then had areas stained with baal red and the old red ink.

a note on the dipping - i won't be using this again on such lovely detailed minis as it did tend to settle & fill in some of the recesses & when i came to high-light some areas there wasn't much ridge detail left. i might try the army painter system next though. the reason i did it this way was at the time my right arm was in a cast following an operation.

typhus and the nurlings were mostly done with the foundation paints as base colours then washed (& in the case of typhus, high-lighted the usual way).

the bases were a mix of sand and small railway ballast added before undercoating. this was based-coated dark flesh then drybrushed with codex grey then space wolves grey.

a note on typhus. part way through (when almost finished) i applied a coat of gloss varnish (brushed on) then a coat of Vallejo matt varnish. some thing weird happened and the model looked like i'd washed it with powdery white paint. i then had to strip it right back.
for this i used phoenix precision PS18 SuperStrip - this is truely amazing stuff. a mate gave to me some time ago and this was the first time i'd used it. it took the varnish, paint and sand/gravel mix right off without damaging the plastic of the base. it did however dissolve the green stuff i had used to fill the gaps. i then put the whole lot in the phoenix precision de-greasing solution without reading the info - this did attack the plastic & hence the display-type base.

I have seen quite a number of posts recently re nurgle & deathguard and hope this helps / inspires those that posted the questions.

all comments welcome & hope you like them (btw these are, with the exception of Typhus, meant to be wargaming standard only)!

Cheers for your time,
Adam

Awesome mate. I want to do a fluffy deathguard army all the more now!

I'm sure you've seen the new FW Dread pics on Bols etc and that will be a perfect addition to your army.

Love the weathering on the metals especially btw, rust and verdigris make my day.

Cheers for posting the pics.

The metals are definitely my favorite parts. Nice use of different metal weathering techniques throughout.

The single nurgling on a single base thing kind of throws me a bit, but I know what you're using them for. I'd just like to see more of em ^_^.

Great models and painting. Can you explain how you did the verdigris effect? Or if you know of a step-by-step article online, White Dwarf, painting guide, that'd be fine too. I'm having trouble understanding if this is painted in or dry-brushed or what. TIA.

I come from a time when basecoats were white, miniatures were metal, and my ork's gun glowed red; I am a McVey disciple.

first - thanks for all your comments. i haven't painted so many minis for a long time and positive comments like this really gets the creative juices flowing

@ grey_death
i was going to use plague bearers but then after spending so much £'s on the rest of the army and the fact i already had the nurglings, i thought it would be more cost effective & fun!

@ armouredreaper
i'm using the heresy tunnel dweller-
http://www.heresyminiatures.com/hm011.htm

@ pinkterror
basically -
base coat of brazen brass (do over tin bitz if you're not getting good coverage)
ink wash (slightly diluted) of a mix of the old dark green and bron ink s.
dry brush of brazen brass.
wash of vile green put selectively into the recesses where verdegree might form.
i offen use Vallego glaze medium for my washes that are made from non-ink paints. if you can't get hold of this where you are, pop into an art shop and ask for an acrylic whetting agent eg Daler Rowney Flow Enhancer./ while there i would also recommend a flow improver and a drying retarder - and try them out. they're not expensive and you may find them useful.
then a dry brush of brazen to blend back the vile green.
with Typhus i started with tin bitz and dry brushed it up through brass, gold then gold & boltgun metal. i used the new washes of mud & green to give a more subtle and controllable finish before applying the vile green.
hope this answers your query.

Haha if you have the money! Too rich for my blood I feel.
But I would definitely get the new one.
It will look fantastic with your weathered metals on.

I think they'd serve you better with some scenic bases ^_^. Maybe something to consider for the next batch ^_^

In Hell, and it's HOT!!!!

Me, personally, am not much of a chaos fan but this is pretty good for me to like.

They are filthy and grotesque--very well done. Those associated nurglings are a charming touch, but most of all that single vile tentacle arm turned my stomach, which is a hallmark of success for any Nurgle force.

Just wow.

Love the rust. Typhus scythes blade is beautiful. I also like how youve highlighted him a bit more to make him stand out. Clever. Like it.

I also like the simple bases and glossy black finish on the side. Might have to steal that too
