So in preperation for an upcoming tournement i have come upon an interesting tactic for gun drones that come from ships (like devil fish, hammerheads and pirahnas)

The 2 gun drones can detach and move 6" toeard a unit. the unit can fire as normal in the shooting phase. in the assualt phase, the gun drones can use thier jet packs to more 6" in front of the unit. The approx 3" cover should be enough for that unit to recieve cover. during the next turn the drones can move away, allowing the firing unit to shoot without giving cover saves and then the drones can move back in the assualt phase.

if the enemy wants to kil the drones, sure it will be easy, but it would also give them no points and just waste a round of shooting, but if they choose to shoot through them, the unit behind them will get 4+ cover saves.

am i wrong or does this in theory work?

"If a target is partially hidden from the firer's view by other models, it receives a 4+ cover save"- p.21 BBB

"When any part of the target model's body is obscured from the point of view of the firer, the target model is in cover". - p.21

"For 'body' we mean its head, torso, legs and arms"- p.16

So yes, you can probably position your drones so they screen your units for a turn. But that also raises the point of why your units aren't in cover in the first place
