Assume that the Big Mek is joined with another unit. You fire the SAG and roll double 5's. the text says that the mek is immediately placed in contact with the target unit and counts as assualting. Here's the question: is the squad transported along with the mek? Or does the codex specific wording allow for the mek to be seperated from the joined unit even though it isn't the movement phase?

I'd have to say JUST the Mek.
The text seems pretty cut and dried.

In order for the squad to count, the SAG rules would need to specify that.
