Hello everyone,
My name is Pierre, I'm french, and I will be head referee at the 40k ETC 2008 this weekend. This is only the second edition of this tournament and we have 10 teams from across europe who will fight in Modena, Italy, to win the title !
Last year Germany came 1st, with Poland following closely as 2d , and Sweden on the 3rd march of the podium. Russia and Spain have entered the competition this year, will they be as brilliant as their soccer team were at this year's european championship ?
This year we will be trying to publish some content to keep as many people as possible informed of whats going on in Modena. I will try to come and post here as frequently as I can...but I make no guarantees as you will understand
There is a website that will be dedicated to covering "live" this event :
http://www.live.sztab.webd.pl/
It's in testing mode atm but saturday morning it will be live ;-)
You also want to check the official website : http://www.forumgwtilea.it/fiw/ETC/
because I know the italians will be publishing some content but I don't know exactly what and when.
Some more content still is available from our official forum :
http://warhammer.org.uk/PhP/viewforum.php?f=19
Here you will find the rulespack, clarifications and all the army lists...
That is all for now, I hope you'll be interested in this event and that you will enjoy the coverage. Feel free to comment/post questions !
Cheers
Pierre

How typical of the English, invent something, then suck at it or don't even play in it!

I shall defend them...they attented brilliantly last year, ending up at the very bottom in the rankings but gloriously holding the title for the most entertaining & fair play team.
This year they add logistical issues....it's not easy for everyone to cross europe for an event...and we play in teams of no less than 8 !
Mind you, they didnt invent the ETC, it was a polish-danish initiative at first...

I brought this up to the Toledo guys because I know they travel for a game of 40K (they go to all of the "A" level events in the US, as well as the UKGT a year or 2 ago, and it does not hurt that they are some of the best players in the US), but they were apathetic to it.
You need 4-8 guys who can commit to it, so it is going to be almost impossible to field a team. See the UK team for an example the problems that you have getting enough guys together, and they are nearby (relatively close anyways).
If you want to read more about it here’s a link for you:
http://warhammer.org.uk/PhP/viewforum.php?f=19&sid=aed1650ad535b4de59e3ba6b9941220b
I would like to play in something like this though. I would take off 3 weeks from work, head on out and play some 40k and then afterwards mail my army back home and wander around Europe. The one big downside to US players is the weak dollar is a killer.

the more i read about this the cooler it is, hey, ill be in europe next summer, i could have someone mail me my army if you guys make it out! although i will be sorely out of practice at that point.
im definitely keeping an eye on this, this is such a cool idea, plus the olypics are on too, all kinds of great international competition going on right now.

I've always had interest in possibly doing this. However, the problems with this from the US side are:
1. Getting a fully committed team. Especially with the a lot of the skilled vets starting families, advancing in the work place and taking on more responsibilities. One of the biggest issues with people that I spoke with is taking vacation time away from their family for this event.
2. The cost associated with it. You will be spending at least a $1,000 just to go there, play and then turn around on a plane to come back to the US. My wife and I spent $2,500 going back to the UK GT finals and then four days in Scotland. We plan on doing this again, but it is something that not everyone can afford to do year after year.
3. Substitutions. I believe it is an eight player event. If you have one player drop out, finding a sub due to the reasons above (especially if it is within a couple months of the event) is going to be difficult and maybe even next to impossible.
4. Quality of Players. If for instance, I was involved, I would want as high a quality of team as possible going over. For me - I would want to assemble what could be considered a "Dream Team". We have more than enough solid players in the US to assemble a rock solid team. But the issues above make this challenging in the best of scenarios.
Overall, I think it is a really neat concept. The logistics of everything is a big concern and is at this point the limiting factor.

Thanks Darrien, same goes for me. If you and cypher made it out that would be two damn good players right there.
If this really goes down, let me know as i could have a friend mail me my army in the begining of the summer and i could get two months of playing in to get back into the groove. Im no slouch on the 40K table either, so i could hold my own no problem.
if anyone needs ideas on getting out here and staying cheap, i am pretty knowledgeable on traveling on a small budget. i am on a $20 a day budget now and I have been going for 5 months, and I have spent three summers in Europe all on really tight budgets. I was there last time for 4 months and the entire trip with airfare was 5 grand total, and i was having a blast too, partying dang near every night. you just have to be smart in how you budget. With the exchange rate now it would be a little more, but not much. for a week, you could swing the entire trip for less than 2 grand, no problem, id say even $1500 is realistic.
In europe it takes a bit more cash to travel but if someone is flexible you can get by on $40 to $50 a day no problem and still get in some good gaming and see the sights.
its a long shot, but if you guys are serious let me know as i will be there anyway and it would be no problem for me to get involved.

Hello guys sorry I let you down but I had to get back to real life in a hurry after this wonderfull weekend of 40k international gaming. Now I finished an important project at work, I planned my next job and got the works started in my house, I'm back in 40k, and of course back to you because I really hope there's will be a US team next year at this event
So first a quick report of the 2008 edition to give you a bit of motivation. The champions this year is Poland, 2d is Germany (former champion), and 3d Sweden. You will find all the detailed results player by player and game by game here :
http://www.forumgwtilea.it/fiw/ETC/
If you dig deeply enough you will understand that this websites featured the results live round after round, as well as the team pairings...thats how motivated europeans are with this event ;-)
You'll find more here http://warhammer.org.uk/PhP/viewforum.php?f=19.
My own pics here : http://picasaweb.google.it/chtiofonce/ETCModena2008#
Apart from the cost of the plane ticket we all have the same issues. Looking at team France this year the age average was close to 30,and everyone had to pay 300-400ish euros overall for the weekend. So sure, sadly not everyone can afford it, but it's the same on another scale to attend your GTs aint it ?
3. Substitutions. I believe it is an eight player event. If you have one player drop out, finding a sub due to the reasons above (especially if it is within a couple months of the event) is going to be difficult and maybe even next to impossible.
Good point. Taking the french example again, we had to find replacements for both editions, more than two replacement each time...So if you have to go for a team, plan big, make it ten players, you'll need them. A lot of teams use a 9th guy as a coach for the 8 others, in order to follow the games and spread the info / adjust individual objectives in game. It wont be as fun for the 9th or 10th sure, but remember this is also a big social event. Also, there is an individual tournament on the side - although it's been pretty small so far we can hope it gets bigger every year like the WHFB guys do.
4. Quality of Players. If for instance, I was involved, I would want as high a quality of team as possible going over. For me - I would want to assemble what could be considered a "Dream Team". We have more than enough solid players in the US to assemble a rock solid team.
There you go champion ;-) National team selection is an issue adressed by each community in their own fashion. In England, Italy and France we use qualifiers (tournaments designed to qualify a team or player for the official team). The Germans and Poles devolve the team making to one guy who has the stature in his community, and this guy of course will discuss the team composition witht the community. National rankings are a good clue to know if someone is qualified enough...but there is no perfection in those rankings as we are talking team gaming with a pairing system which transformes the game into something special...I'm sure you'll love it ^^
Ok so I believe you need to do some talking amongst yourselves and get the players who could be interested involved...then a leader has to emerge, step in and say 'I will represent the US and do my best to form a team to attend the 2009 ETC' (which will then become an ITC) and I will introduce this guy to the 40k ETC Captain Council so that your nation be involved in the next edition's preparation (it already started, lots of things to tune up with 5th ed. of course).
It's all up to you know...tell me what you think of this ;-)
cheers

Looks like a cool thing.
The US should do a State by State or regional kind of thing like this.
|
'Lo, there do I see my father. 'Lo, there do I see...My mother, and my sisters, and my brothers. 'Lo, there do I see...The line of my people...Back to the beginning. 'Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them. Iin the halls of Valhalla... Where the brave... May live... ...forever.
