Well, I have been reading a book on the Battle of Ia Drang. (The one in Vietnam that the movie "We were soldiers" was based upon. More recently I have been reading that Guard arimes have problems holding onto objectives once parked there, or even in getting there for the foot sloggers. So I was thinking about this and obivously put two and two together.

Now regular guard armies have their inf. regiments and their arm. regiments. and their drop troops. Why not air cav? It certainly seems like they could do it form the fluff. (with one of those "V" named hover crafts of thiers) They have helicopter like abilities and the guard could really use the boost. Now I was thinking along the lines of a Stormtrooper or possibly something better that would be able to deepstrike before the game even began. Letting them sit on that mid ground objective or at least cover it from a roof top or ruined building. Personally I would love that kind of aspect in the army. Possibly either as Fast Attack or Elites. (probably not troops because to be effective they would have a better statline than your average guardsmen, and probably be bolter equivalent armed)

Or you could run the guard similar to how the soviets are run in Flames of War, damn near useless in small numbers but then again they usually outnumber you at least two to occasionally four times your numbers. So pretty much make everything in the troops section absolutely suck out loud. But make them so cheap that you can take a ridiculous amount. (Say 100 points a platoon plus uprades, that drops guardsmen to like 1.6 points per model.) So the guard would out number you ridiculously, but they would need that kind of numbers to be effective.

A thing on the side I would like is an increase in numbers of Artillery, in the fluff it always says that the guard bring a ridiculous amount of Arty to war, yet I only see three large blasts in the lists. (Russes and Basilisks) So again I would like to see the power of say the basilisk toned down. (or at the very least give them another decent arty peice, like say similar to the SM's new one) That way you could feel like you where bringin awsome amounts of fire power. (and it would totally look sweet!)

Oh and one more thing, I would make the mortar rounds str 3 ap - and then have them use that multiple large plate plate from apocalyspe. (but only if the Mortars where like 6 mortars strong or something similar)

I would not enjoy having to buy another 300 guardsmen to even reach a 1000 pt army. Really, I wouldn't.

There was some talk about those valkyries becoming skimmer transports for STs, but that might happen only in that Planetfall book that's supposedly in the works.

Someone was saying that the nex IG codex will allow a squadron of up to 3 Russes to count as a single heavy support choice, so you'd be able to get 5 big guns in an army. Personally, I think that's quite enough for an infantry based list. If you want more, there's always Armored Company.

While I love mortars, I'd rather see them become a bit more accurate than cover a quarter of the battlefield with each barrage. Apoc templates should stay in the Apoc enviroment where they belong. besides, that big multiple template you're talking about is just a normal 5" template with very simplified, built-in scatter options. The scatter dice is much better for normal games.
