Hey,
I just started playing WFB a few months ago. I've stalked about without an account for a while and really like the forums, I was playing an Orcs and Gob army but I sold them to a friend for a cheap price. I never finished painting those Orcs and Gobs :[, but I've taken up a new army to play. Vampire Counts, I really always have liked anything that has to do with the unliving and so it was an easy choice.

Oh and on another note, I'm still assembling my legion of the dead.. consequently I didn't have much forethought to not slap on shields on my skeletons, until I had painted them up. Anyone got any advice on how to make the task of painting them less daunting? (I enjoy painting greatly, but I feel like this will be a bit daunting with the shield obscuring so much of the skeletons and my being a novice doesn't help ;p.)

Thanks guys,
Ark.

The great thing about shields is the same thing that makes them absolute B@$t@rd$. They obscure the paint, making one less spot that you have to paint, but they also make a whole bunch of spots that are really tough to make good.

My advice is this. Get the small drybrush from GW. It is the best brush they have, and the only one that is worth its inflated price. Treat it like it is your first born baby child. Do NOT forget to put the cap on when you stop painting. Do NOT leave it in the water. Do not let any paint dry on the brush. And do NOT drybrush like a maniac. If you follow these and other basic rules of brush care, you will have a brush that has a tip sharp enough to stab yourself with... ok... so maybe stabbing yourself with a paint brush isn't such a great idea. but it shows how good the brush is. The small drybrushing brush does not look small, but it can paint better detail than the fine detail brush by a huge margin. Aside from that, just take your time, and you'll be fine.

Also, don't paint if you don't feel like it. If you do that then you'll get sick of em.

Hi Ark,

Welcome to Dakka.

It can be a daunting task having all those figures to paint. The best advice given to me was "try and paint at least one figure a day".
I also wrote out a list of the figures i had to paint, and worked out the date i should finish them. You'll have days where you're painting a character model which will take more than one day. It worked for me, it gives you an incentive, because you feel great when you paint 10 in a day.

Hello to you. I'll point out that if you can't really see a spot very well, other people looking at your models won't see that spot very well either. So I wouldn't worry about it too much. I wouldn't tell this to someone going for a Golden Demon or painting an important model, but if you're a novice painting rank and file troops, it's cool. I use black undercoats a lot, and oftentimes I just leave these really hard to see spots black.

Also, when you stick the shields on, if your skeletons are completed, I'd scrape the paint off the spot where they connect. Your bond should be a little better that way. I'm not sure if this answers your question or not but hopefully that helps.

Thanks for the advice and welcome, guys.

I'll see if I can't slap a picture of my first skeleton on here later today when I get the time.

Thanks again.

Welcome to dakka.

Will look for your skelton pics in the painting forum to give tips on painting.

You could highlight them with multiple layers and end up with something like this:

Or you could just go the sane route, spray white, devlan mud wash, highlight or drybrush bleached bone then white.
