So..after over four years, I've finally got down and put the first color on some Troops for my SoB army. I've been collecting the figures since before the WH codex was released and I've been agonizing over starting the painting because of 3 issues. I wanted to have some conversions so that my VSS's were not all the same. Given the poses of the metal figures the SoB line does not lend itself to conversions easily. That hung me up for some time, but I got most everything converted that I'd planned.

The second hang-up was the prep for the figures. Again being all metal there was tons of flash and mold lines to work out and I really didn't want to deal with this part. When you're looking at roughly 70+ metal figures to do this to it gets a bit depressing. The last issue was the mental anguish over painting these models. There's alot of fine detail work on these figures and I really have just hated the thought of painting these girls because of it.

I'd gone on Bolter and Chainsword a few days ago to test my color scheme and I liked it so much I just had to start laying down some paint. Here's the scheme:

The armour is Scab Red and I'll likely highlight with Red Gore
Trim/Icons/chains will be gold. I usually paint those item black first then gold so that you get good contrast.
The Robes will be Bleached Bone and I haven't decided on what darker shade to use in the recesses yet.

The Order has a name, as you saw in the title and I'm using the banner from the WHFB Grail Knight. It just seemed perfect. Cannoness Zoot will administer all Spankings. More pics will follow as I get them.

Well, here's some WIP pics. I've finally managed to get the two base colors on the squad. Sadly it's time and labor intensive cutting one color around the other. Either way, I'll have to still go back and touch up before I can proceed with the next color. I'll likely do my trim next in black (eventually gold) then I'll throw a light wash on the models. Faces and hair will be a final add as well as some highlights. No hard edge highlighting as I just don't like it myself.

Yikes...this is taking about as long as I thought it would. Don't get me wrong, I knew these ladies would be a pain to paint, that's why I procrastinated over 4 years. I finally got the 3rd color on the squad. Ofc, it'll be covered by gold as one of the last things I do. Right now I think I'm in a prime position to give these girls a wash. I'm not too sure on what to do though. I refuse to do a black wash as it'll be a pain to keep the bleached bone looking nice. I'm thinking of a dark brown wash, maybe scorched earth. Yeah, I know...try the new citadel washes... Part of me says, 'yeah, why not...' another part of me says, 'stick to what you know'. Anyway, gotta take a break for a day or so then I'll decided. C&C more than welcome and appreciated btw.

Ooops...need to put in the pics...

Same color as my Tau. I knew I had good taste. They look great. I can't wait to see more.

Good to know the color scheme is a good one then. BTW, what color of wash did you use if any?

Very old school painting. I like that.

Looks like a great start you got there.

These are the first of roughly 70 SoB I've got to paint. I also got 2 Immolators 2 Rhinos and a LR to convert for an Inquisitor. I'm going to have to try a few different things w/ the additional squads to try and speed up the process but I'm committed to seeing this army through to the end. Right now I'm speculating it'll take me a month for each 10 man squad just because of the figures and how I want to paint them.

I used scorched brown in the few spots where I used wash. It's a perfect, neutral color which goes well with almost anything.

Scyzantine Empire

Very nice start. I'd go with a very diluted Graveyard Earth if you're going to use Citadel Paint to wash with, but otherwise the Sepia is perfect for Bleached Bone fabrics. Goes nicely over gold too, so you could base your gold and wash it and the tabards at the same time.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Excellent! Ty both for the affirmation on using a dark brown wash. Since there is really very little left to actually put a base color on...grenades, sidearms and pouches, I'll go ahead and finish them up then do the wash. The heads I'll leave till last though as I want to give each SoB a variation of hair color. No white powder wigs here, 'cept for the VSS I suppose

A'ight. Here's a quick update on the VSS I've been doing. I've gotten all the base colors on the squad but at this point I'll be going model by model as I put on the wash and re-highlight the areas. The VSS is nearly done, obviously I still need to finish up both weapons and put a grey wash on the hair. Overall I'm happy with the Scorched Earth as a wash over the whole model. It's a little dark at times on the robes, but that's easy enough to offset when I go back and highlight in Bleached Bone.

I know I proposed it'd take me about three weeks to do the whole squad and I'm pretty sure it'll take that to finish it out. Basing...eh..I'll probably go simplistic. I'm thinking broken tile which will be easy to do w/ some plasticard and an exacto. I normally don't go too far on the bases, usually some paint maybe some flock but that's usually it. There's enough work going into these figures as it is w/o extensive basing.

Still...leave some C&C as I haven't started washing the remainder of the squad. I'd like anything that needs pointing out to happen now as opposed to later. Thanks.

Loving the scab red and bleach bone color combo! Goes well together. Keep painting! Don't get discouraged, just put on some good music and let the brush fly!

Nice color scheme - inspirational for my hopes of getting an SOB army.

I rather like the color scheme as well. Looks like it will tie together well indeed.

In terms of washing, I would recommend Devlan Mud for the reds at least, and maybe the cloaks as well. As was noted about scorched brown, it is a great neutral color.

Heh, thk....this is about what I've been doing to be honest. I know I procrastinated because of the difficulty on painting these girls but I'm seriously charged now that I see the scheme is working so well. It still hurts like hell painting all the details but most of that is age now...

I do need to at least try some of the new GW washes. I've got lots of these girls to paint so I'd say it'll be sooner than later.

Later the same day....

I finally got the VSS completely finished, sans basing as I'll do all that together for the squad. She looks damn good and I'll post some pics tomorrow when I have some outside lighting available.

Finally! Well, almost ;p. I've got half the squad done now and if I get the other 5 washed tonight, I'll likely have the rest done by week's end. Now that I've come close to having this one squad finished, I have a better idea of judging my workflow as well as arranging steps to speed things up. I'm guessing 2 weeks for the next squad, start to finish. We'll see. Anyway, I'd realized a few days ago I still needed to paint the backpacks! So I got down and did those and managed to do a few of the sisters as well. As already noted, I like how they look and I'll still have the bases to take care of. Still...feel free to leave any C&C. This will be a lengthy project and I'll not bore everyone with pics of every figure/squad I paint so it'll likely be a long time before another post after this squad is done. There are a few things I'm in process of modding and I'll post them and ofc put up some pics of transports when I get one done. Thanks again!

That is almost the exact same color scheme I am doing on my Sisters, except I am using a slightly brighter red, and slightly brighter/paler golds.

Awesome work, dude. This will be a very impressive army when its done! Any vehicles in your army?

I got 2 rhinos and 2 immolators to build and paint as of yet. I'm starting in the FoC mindset so I'm doing 2 troop squads first, my HQ then I'll start a few of the transports. Nice to know you're doing a similiar scheme Gabe. I'd originally thought of doing a brighter red but it just didn't suit me for some reason. I'm sure you'll pull it off fabulously. I'd decided on their color years ago but never got around to painting. Then I almost changed it when I started filling out a Word Bearer's army I inherited. I'm glad I left it... the Bleached Bone and Gold make it more striking on these girls.

Heh, P4NC4K3...I'm actually going to do figures of the 'Spanish inquisition' for that
