I started working on an ork army, here are some first photos. I still have to paint about 35 Boyz, 20 Gretchin, 2 Killa Kanz, 2 Deffcoptas and 3 Bikez. I will do all the bases together at the end so as not to waste materials.

I used snot green for the skin, chainmail in different degrees of drybrushing for the metal, the reddish metal is black->drybrushed blood red->drybrushed chainmail. The leather is Beastial Brown drybrushed with bleached bone. I used Gryphonne Sepia wash for all the shadows.

Any tips on how to make them look better are welcomed.

Here are the photobucket links:

- 10 Gretchin with Runtherd:

-1 Killa Kan with Rokkit Launcha...the greenstuff under the right foot is a placeholder for a Spacemarine head or torso, the pattern on the rokkits is hand-painted:

-3 Waghbikez one of which a nob:

-1 Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun:

-1 Waaghboss:

I really like your work. The metal and other bitz are crisp and clean-cut in terms of painting work. You have made great use of drybrushing too.

However, the skin looks very 'shallow'. The deeper parts of the flesh aren't defined very clearly. I recommend using a Thraka green or Badab Black wash and highlighting back up with your base skin colour (snot green).

Hope to see more of this soon.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!

Nice, pretty generic but then again it is kind of hard to be original with orks. I like the Runtherd.

Thanks, thats a really good suggestion. I'll get some Thraka green as soon as I get the chance and try it on an Ork boy.

I will keep this post updated with new images as soon as I finish other models. I also got a trukk and 6 boyz finished but they're at my other house so I'll be posting photos of those in a week or so.

Yea I too was going to suggest that you either highlight the skin tone, or wash it to bring the color out. over all tho you did a really nice job panting.

Agreed, and I would also suggest you dirty up the teeth a little there dental work looks overly clean, maybe its just the lighting.

Its just the lighting...I put some gryphonne sepia on the teeth as well...up close they have the same color as the skull on the Biker-Nobs bike. The only ones I forgot to dirty-up a bit are those of the Waaghboss. I took the photos with my web-cam so the colors are a bit off.

And thanks very much to everyone for the good comments.

As your painting is nice and crisp the only thing I would suggest, other than washing with Thraka Green, would be the removal of the mould lines on some of your plastics. Most of them seem to have been removed but there's the odd one on your bikers that can be seen still.

You've done a lovely job with these so far so I'll be interested to see how your army progresses.

Under the Himalaiyan mountains

That looks like a really good beginning for an army.

"I.. I know my time has come" Tethesis said with a gasp, a torrent of blood flowing from his lips.
"No! Hang on brother!!" Altharius could feel the warmth slip away from his dear sibling's hands

Tethesis's reached out his bloodied arm to Altharius's face.
"I..I have one final request"
Altharius leaned close to listen, tears welling in his once bright eyes.
"make sure th..they put my soulstone in a tank... it'll be... real fethin' cool"
"Yes, you're gonna be the most fethin' cool tank!!" burning hot tears streaked down Altharius's face, as he held his brother's soul in his grasp.

Great start to the army dude!!

I will add one small observation. Spend a bit more time cleaning up your models prior to painting, I can spot quite a few mould lines on the finished pieces, and sadly nothing draws an eye than an unsightly mould line.

Very good start though!

Here's one more Killa Kan...its pretty similar to the last one except for some minor colour changes and that blade from a Waaghbike on the rocket launcher. Does that look OK or should I round it up a bit with some GS? And what do you think looks best on the rokkitz, the checkered design or the flames?

I also tried to make it look as if its walking, hope that I'm not imagining my success with that :p

Looks good so far. this will be a nice army when it all comes together.
Couple of tips:
1) Remove your mold lines (as somebody suggested already). It really detracts from a nice paint job.
2) BASE YOUR MODELS!!! Throw some sand, dirt, mud, ice, lava, grass, rubble, whatever on those bases. Nothing screams "INCOMPLETE!" in an army louder than unbased models. That snotling on the Shokk is scraping his fingernails on some substance in the middle of an empty base. Just doesn't look right.

Also, thanks for the disclaimer that you "hand-painted" the checks on the rokkits.

all i would say is wash the skin a bit.

on another note, if your going to keep this updated on a regular basis then PM a mod and ask him to move it over to P&M blogs

Yeah, those mold lines that I missed really stick out now that I've noticed them...I'll file them away over the next couple of days.

I will be basing all the models together when I'm done with the whole army as -in my experience- it uses up less materials that way, which makes it cheaper.

@JD thanks for that....I hadn't seen that there was such a subcategory on the forum or I would have posted there in the first place. I will contact a mod.
