I have noticed the question 'how to remove paint from forgeworld models' comes up a lot ( I started a thread to that effect myself not so long ago) and the answer is usually 'do a search' or 'look at the articles' after having done this unsucessfully a few times I decided to do some experimentation of my own. My goal in this is to 'test to destruction' various methods of paint removal from forgeworld bits.

So, to start with I rummaged through my bitz box for some miscast forgeworld parts that the nice people at forgeworld let me keep after sending through replacements. Next I went down to my local supermarket and selected 2 substances that have been suggested for taking paint off of models, 1) Dettol and 2) acetone based nail polish remover, these are recommended for plastic and metal models respectively. So, after filling up a container of each and quickly painting the pieces, i put the bits in the chemicals and started timing. (model was scrubbed gently with a toothbrush at regular intervals and 'flexed' to test degradation.)

Results: Dettol: after 20 minutes the paint starts to come off, no effect on the bit. Even after 12 hours bit remains unharmed

Acetone: removes paint very fast (less than 3 mintues of exposure) but the model begins to soften after about 10 minutes soaking, this becomes progressively worse over time, and after 12 hours the bits have disintergrated.

Conclusions: Acetones faster but dettols safer

In the future I plan to test some of the other alternatives such as pinesol and brake fluid , (I know simple green has already been done on youtube and the like)

Which Dettol are you using?

(there's a lot of 'Dettol' branded products...)

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.
