Hi,
below is my wood elf army which i designed 2 years ago. i haven´t been playing much for the last two years and wanted to see what you thought of how it would hold up in the current game. please note i generally try to design all rounder armies (/tornament armies) and don´t like to tailor my list to beat one particular army. simply how i like to do it.
2000pt wood elf army
General
treeman ancient - murder of spites, cluster of radiants, annoyance of netlings, a befuddlement of mschief - 425
heroes
spellsinger - lv2, 2 dispell scrolls - 175 (hides where ever possible)
noble - great weapon, shield, light armour, helm of the hunt, hail of doom arrow - 133 (goes with wardancers)
core
10 glade guard - 120
10 glade guard - 120
5 glade riders - 129
8 dryads - 96
8 dryads - 96
special
7 wardancers - champ, muso - 147
7 wardancers - champ, muso - 147
5 wild riders - muso - 130
4 warhawk riders - 160
5 waywatchers - 120
this is designed as a quick manoverable force. i can easily do a refused flank and either bring the fight to the enemy quickly or sit back and let them come to me (while shooting them of course). i tend to use my archery not to kill stuff (unless if it is small and fragile like dark riders) but to simply remove rank bonus´ increasing my chances of success in combat.
warhawk riders, glade riders and waywatchers are my bait units who also provide an avenue for removing warmachines and enemy wizards.
note the ancient has the befuddlement cause i had an extra 25 points spare and the wizard is LV2 as i wanted the potential to do more than just treesinging in the magic phase (plus 35pts for 2 casting dice ain´t bad)

It's not a complete pushover although you're missing out on a lot of useful stuff. HodA along with the el cheapo magic bow should be given to a Noble BSB, and you need two more dispel scrolls to make the army competitive. The caddies should be level 1 casters in most cases.
I'd also completely drop the glade riders, warhawk riders and the waywatchers, and replace them with more wild riders (in units of 6 by the way) and more glade guard. Then you'll be nearing on the best WE army available.
It's a whole different question altogether what Wood Elves have that can deal with 24 stubborn Flesh Hounds, or even something as singular as a Balesword GUO or the cookie cutter Bloodthirster. The answer is, not much. Wardancers en masse could do a number on Flesh Hounds, but all the solutions against Greater Daemons require tons of luck. What I would suggest is a horseshoe shaped free wood and just try to use treesinging to your advantage as much as possible. It won't be very viable with most WE lists though because they have to cut back on power dice to be able to afford units.

doesn´t the noble BSB loose his bow making HoDA unuseable (which FYI i have on the noble).
the treeman ancient Vs the bloodthirster? that should work shouldn´t it? he is a character (correct me if i´m wrong) so he´ll be hitting on 6´s Vs me?

He buys the magical bow to shoot the hoda with.

No, the Ancient is dead in two or three combat phases. BT has 7 attacks, hits on 6's, but re-rolls all misses every turn. He hits twice every combat phase, wounds on 3+, ignores the armour and the ward and the attacks are flaming so cause double wounds.

ah ok.
but as you loose your bow you are not allowed to purchase a magic bow? it´s like characters who can not purchase normal armour can not purchase magic armour. i understood the reasoning behind you loosing your bow is it wouldn´t be possible to use it and carry the standard

A. Yes, he can use a magic bow, as he can be given magic weapons.

Why not? Isn't it one of the army's special rules? Why would they restrict it anymore than, say, undead don't cause fear or daemons saves are Ward saves?

because you can only use the free woods in a pitched battle scenario. frequently they change that (adding objectives etc)

because most tournament rules specifically state you cannot move the terrain on a board under any circumstances, this includes moving your own scenery or adding extra terrain to the table, sucks really

Most? You're an English guy on an American forum replying to a thread made by an Australian. I doubt you've traveled to tournaments outside your little island enough to make ignorant blanket statements like the one I've quoted. I've never been, seen or heard of a tournament where WE couldn't use treesinging to move existing woods, and in basically every tournament they get to use their free wood in atleast 30% of the games.

i´ve never been to a tornament which says you can not move the terrain. if i turned up to a tornament with my wood elves and they said that i´d be pretty damn pissed off as all my magic does is move woods. i do always try to move the woods back to roughly where they were at the start of the game afterward it.

back to the list at hand.
35 points for the second level would be much better spent on the 25 points for the Noble to become an Alter Kindred. MV 9 and +1 Att are very good things for a noble with a Great Weapon.
I think you are spending too many points on the TMA, 50 to be exact. The TMA isn't what he used to be. His job is to be an anvil, too many things out there are too tough for even him to deal with. The MoS and BoM points would be spent better elsewhere.
If you go Scroll Caddy, lvl 1. If you want a decent treesinging phase, go level 2 and get a Caligor's Staff. Then another Spellsinger and you'll have a good treesinging phase, which can really be helpful.
Your core is spot on, exactly what I play. (note, you don't list the musician for the Glade Riders, but you do pay the points for it)
Wardancers have lost a bit of bite with the latest Army Books. I would look elsewhere then getting two units of them.
Wild Riders really need a sixth body and a standard (which should also be your warbanner). Compared to a lot of the newer, harder hitting things out there the +2 CR is so important to win on the charge, which is what they must do.
Warhawk riders are really sucking wind these days. Mages are tougher to hunt down, leaving them as warmachine hunters or flank/rear chargers that don't break ranks. Personally, I am moving towards more Glade Riders to fulfill the same roll.
Waywatchers are okay, they often have a good target to shoot at (good AS) but often cause more of a disruption then actually kill their points value. Definately keep the unit small and look out for MM spells and anything that doesn't require a roll to hit.
Overall, I'd decide if you want the second singer or more killy stuff. I'd swap the 2nd wardancers for either another killy Alter Noble, or the second singer.
Wood Elfs are really struggling to kill tougher enemies... and with VC, WoC, Lizardmen or DE monster builds, you need to get as much high STR attacks that you can muster to deal with these opponents. And as for Daemons, well, I don't plan to beat them, I just shrug my shoulders and say "good job, Gee-Dub Yah" and hope for a draw or minor loss.

thanks dainty,
how do you think treekin hold up. i´ve never been much of a fan though.
as for the alter noble what about the whole being able to be shot down with the current rules (characters can be targeted). that was the only thing that concerned me about taking him

I love my Treekin. I don't line them up against the enemy's battle line because they struggle against a lot of static CR, or other nasty enemy blocks.
What they do seem to do well against are enemy cav (not WoC, mind you), chariots and flankers. They go straight through them. I always put my on a wing and send them straight ahead, then turn into the center and head for flanks.
The only way I lose my Alter nobles (I run two) is if I charge in with just one of them and fluff the attacks. With good positioning you should never really fear return fire. You need to be careful about MM spells, but Alters make great mage hunters, warmachine killers and can boost any units combat res by 2 or 3 wounds easily, which can sometime be enough to win, then you have a 3d6 pursuit roll.

Ok i´ve taken into account the suggestions and here is what i´ve come up with
2000pt wood elf army
General
treeman ancient - cluster of radiants, annoyance of netlings - 375
heroes
spellsinger - 2 dispell scrolls - 140 (hides where ever possible)
Alter noble - great weapon, shield, light armour, murder of spites, hail of doom arrow - 153
Noble - battle standard bearer, Asyendie´s Bane, hail of doom arrow - 140
core
10 glade guard - 120
10 glade guard - 120
5 glade riders - 129
8 dryads - 96
8 dryads - 96
special
7 wardancers - champ, muso - 147
7 wardancers - champ, muso - 147
6 wild riders - standard, champ, muso, warbanner - 217
5 waywatchers - 120
total - 2000
i couldn´t justify taking a second wizard as i don´t think it would be that effective offensively and it only increases my defense slightly so i put in the second noble
i also thought that the second unit of wardancers was best value for points but if you think something else then let me know.
