Well today, on my day off of all days, I discovered (via a phone call from my boss) that over the next 6 months that 2/3 of the staff in my department are have their jobs moved to the far east.

Aside from feeling very annoyed and betrayed (we were promised categorically that there would be no job losses by our CEO only 3 months ago) I'm downright disgusted that our jobs are clearly still deemed necessary but are simply being given to people who will do it on the cheap. Ironically I've never believed in protectionism but now I'm on the receiving end I am starting to question my previous thoughts. Even if I'm one of the lucky 1/3 I still don't think I'll feel the same about the company I work for if this is how they treat their employees.

The (partly) good news is that the redundancy package being offered above the statutory legal requirement (which I think is one weeks pay for every year of service) but how much by will not become apparent for a few weeks.

This time last year I would have taken solace in the fact that I have plenty of experience and skills in my field (IT). But now even that's looking bad as the market is looking increasingly worse and I don't know how many jobs (If any) will become available. Especially if I'm going to competing against all my ex colleges!

Anyway there's no point to this thread other than to get if off my chest! Damn the economic crisis!

That really blows. Would anything come if you went to the top and said to the CEO, your talk doesn't match your walk, etc.?

I say screw the protectionism hang ringers. I don't know how it is in your parts, or in England for that matter. But where I live we'd much rather have the jobs remain here. in addition I'm tired of all this societal guilt trip crap about how it's not fair and not right to have one society keep their jobs while another country/society suffers because of it.

Sorry to hear, mate.

This economy sucks. My company had across the board salary cuts and ended up effectively laying off one guy (out of 11 employees). Thing is, as awkward as it is to have someone you've worked with leave, if you're fortunate enough to keep your job, chances are you'll be too busy with the redistributed work to think too much about it.

Ah $%^& it man, tough luck. Still.... it might be alright for you personally still right ? I'll keep them crossed regardless.

..no chance of a hugely generous resettlement package then ? I hear you'd look good in a kimono.
