Hello,

Thought this might be news. Anybody else unable to navigate GWs site while using Explorer?

I get a popup with icons of FireFox, Apple Safari, Google Chrome and Opera. All of which take me to the site for their browser.

Now, is it possible to bypass this? Or am I unable to get to their site without installing a 2nd browser?

Thanks

On the popup there is a close button. Click the close button.
In any case, is there any particular reason you use IE? Ever since I switched to firefox I have realized how slow IE is.

You could just tick the "don't show this again" box and click the green "close" button. GW isn't forcing you to switch browsers, they are just suggesting other browsers that are better for viewing their site.

I noticed this earlier this week. If you stick with IE there are problems adding items to the shopping cart, the pictures occlude some buttons. My guess is that GW changed the code for their online store, but was too lazy to compensate for IE's box model quiks.

As somebody who has worked professionally in web development, I can sympathize. IE completely screws up the DOM box model. However, it's still the most popular browser and you don't get to choose what your customers use. The proper thing to do is to make sure your site works for all the most common browsers (IE,FF, Opera and Safari). It's a lot more work, but that's what separates a professional outfit from an amateur operation. Personally, I find GW's approach unacceptable.

Right now I have IE 7, FF 3 and Opera 9 installed and I use both IE and FF regularly. Unlike what the OSS zealots will tell you IE is not complete trash and should not be disregarded. FF is good, but in my opinion it's not good enough to completely replace IE.

Yeah... If there was a close button, I would have clicked it. is there any reason it wouldn't show?

I use Explorer because it does what I need it to, and I feel no need to change it.

Slow is a relative term. Up until moving 6 months ago, I still had a 28k phone line connection. Now I have a cable hookup and it feels blazing fast.

Didn't really want to install a program to visit one site, so I guess I will just not go there. I don't shop there anyway.

I'm so glad to hear someone else say that. I finally bit the bullet and loaded up firefox due to all my friends raving about it and honestly I found little to like over newer versions of IE. I use safari almost exclusively on my mac, and even then I find safari to be better than FF. I really don't understand peoples draw to it.

boy, there's a great idea from across the pond: coding a website that doesn't properly support the most common (not necessarily best mind you) browser! i got that message for the first time about 2 days ago also and was wondering if that's why it takes SOOOOO long for a drop down menu to appear.

Bright side: IE8 will (finally!) be somewhat standards-compliant, which should resolve your issues.

(Dark side: all those other sites on the 'net which coded for IE, instead of for standards, will be "broken." Muahahahaha! Mine is an evil laugh!)

Firefox was tons better than earlier versions of IE. IE has pretty much caught up now.

IE8 will be W3C standard compliant so a lot of sites coded for IE7- will break.

Perhaps GW's web team jumped the gun in terms of making their site standards compliant. The problem will go away as MS users switch to IE8.

Might I suggest this threads title be changed to "Internet Explorer and GW's website?" since Windows Explorer is an entirely different application that every copy of windows runs.

Done.

To be fair, most users probably aren't aware or don't register/recognise that MS called the file system Windows Explorer when they were going through their "everything is going to be on the Internets" phase a few years ago.

I never think of it as Windows Explorer, it's just Windows.

I had loads of problems with the GW site before I got a new computer. My old one was reallly old and couldn't handle the site for some reason, whether that was becuase of an unupdated browser, a lack of processing speed, or a lack of memory is beyond me. The only thing I know is I'm running a new version of IE now on a fast computer and I have no problems on the GW site, though I still get the pop-up telling me it would be better to use a differant browser.

IE8 is finally fixing the DOM box-rendering quirks? Oh, happy day. I'm sick of having to put in workarounds for IE6 & 7 on every site I program.

Better yet, the rumour is that IE8 will actually pass Acid2.
