So, I am thinking about perhaps doing a Dark Eldar Army.

Really all Im looking for is generic advice on how to make a good army.

Welcome to the club. The general feling in 5th edition is to play an "air force"

The dark eldar force I'm woring on will consist of 8-9 raiders (5-6 troops with a darklance and three wych squads) and 3 ravangers with destructors. With my force I have as many as 15 dark lance shots on the first turn along with 9 small blasts at AP2.

Nightshields work well as more and more melta weapons show up.

With up to 24" movement assaulting raiders can be pretty hard. Another trick is to start the warriors on the board not inside the raiders, that way the other player has to decide if he is targeting the raiders or the squad

In general I treat close combat as a last resort for this type of army.

Ya I had kind of twigged the Air Cav type of army. What would you recomend for a 1500 point list?

check out the blog www.yesthetruthhurts.com You'll find some great ideas for a dark eldar list.

pretty much load up on as many raiders you can, get some Haemonculi with destructors, and get three ravangers.

Lol...yes, Stelek has some excellent, but non-conventional, Dark Eldar builds.

I'm not a huge fan of wyches, at least not for assault. They just don't have the punch to kill most enemy melee units, ad they are so fragile to shooting. I've been much more pleased with Incubi.

As for a list...I play with something like this on a regular basis and have been pretty pleased with it:

Dracon with drugs, punisher, tormenter helm
4 warriors with 2 dark lances
5 incubi
raider with night shields and dark lance

6 Raider squads
5 warriors with 1 dark lance, 1 blaster
Raider with night shields, dark lance

3 x Ravagers with 2 disintegrators, night shields

Adding shredders and/or splinter cannons will increase you anti-GEQ firepower, but reduce MEQ/AT firepower.

Ravagers often come in with 3 disntegrators, because they really are awesome weapons, but the extra dark lances often come in handy, at least from my experience. Dark lances really aren't that effective against armor, so it can often take many shots to effectively destroy something...take a land raider for example:
2/3 hit, 1/3 pens, 1/3 destroys equals 2/27 chance to destroy...assuming no cover save. Sure, there are other results possible and glance results, but in the end it can take a lot of shots to shut down armor, and it doesn't take many shots to shut down DE.

Haemonculi with destructors are also pretty handy...I just don't have the models to use, and taking them limits my incubi and dark lance carrying squads.

I wouldn't mess with Talos, scourges (ugh), grotesques, mandrakes or hellions. Some people like reaver bikes, but I think they're a minority.

The HQs are the main melee power of the list, and it's easy to get carried away with them. Really, the HQ I have could probably smoke most enemy melee units without the drugs and 1 fewer incubi, but a little insurance isn't bad.

To bump up to the next point level, I'd look at adding another HQ squad and maybe bump the squads up to 6 warriors each.

My biggest fear is static gunline infantry horde armies. So many heavy weapons, all of which can easily trash DE vehicles and troops. Without being to consolidate from winning 1 melee to starting another, assaulting (with wyches especially) isn't nearly as good a solution as it once was.

I'm currently working with a Dark Eldar army myself and have worked it up only to 1250pt.

A simple HQ in a Dracon: Punisher, Tormentor
with 5 Incubi, in a Raider.

4 Raider squads
-2 w/Dark Lances
-2 w/Splinter Cannon

2 Reaver Jetbike squads
-3 Bikes each w/2 Blasters

2 x5 Scourge units
-Splinter Cannon x2

Nothing too overpowering and most things very unassuming. But the fire power the army can create on a usual basis is staggering when you position yourself well.

I guess I am the only player around that plays DE regularly.

Well First off Raiders are great, I personally run them with disintegrators and nothing else. If I am carrying warriors they always get 1 x Splinter cannon, and 1 X blaster and nothing else the whole unit costs 155 pts and IMO is a steal. Don't listen to the guy that says to take 1 x DL on the raiders and 1 x DL in the squad since DLs are heavy the raider would have to stand still to fire both, and if you are going to do they you might as well just run a unit of 10 X warriors with 2 x DLs (which I recommend taking anyways).

I always take a "boat" with an acrchon w/ punisher, tormentor helm, combat drugs, and shadow field, 2 x warriors with Splinter Cannons, and then as many incubi as I can fit in. This unit is priceless, if you can't make up two times your points every game with this unit your playing the wrong army.

Your second HQ will be 3 X Hemonculous with Destructors and scissor hands.

As stated before wyches are fragile and always should be mounted in a raider, take a smallish squad with wych weapons and plasma grenades, a succubus with an agoniser helps too, Don't forget to buy a whole unit of warpbeasts for every wyche squad you buy, at 75pts they are the best value on the list (20 normal attack on the charge and 3 PW attacks that hit on 4+, not to mention a 12" charge range and fleet!!)

For your heavy choice its between these two options:

3 x Ravagers w/ 3 x disintegrators
or

3 x Talos

If you choose the Ravagers make sure you remember that you can fire 1 blast template and 6 X str4 ap 3 shots while moving up to 12", it is also acceptable to take 1 x BL if you feel it might do better than a plasma cannon shot.

For fast attack the only choice is Jetbikes, always take the 2 X blasters for 5 pts each.

NEVER TAKE:
Hellions
Scourges

As for competitive lists there are a few options:

Raider spam
Jetbike assault
Hardy footsloggers
Mass gun line
wyche cult

If you want to know more about any of those list let me know, and I will post a list or two and some basic tactics.

goodnight for now,
Chris

I would wait for the new dark Eldar codex and models to come out before stqarting a DE army.

I heard that it was coming out later this year, before Codex Necrons.

They came off the shelves due to lack of space, right? What with War of the Rings and Apoc, where will they now find shelf space? Has any army ever made a return from "Online only" purgatory?
