This is a batrep for our local tournament that is played once a month. I brought my salamanders even though there were more marine players than you could shake a stick at, my list:

Let me preempt all of this with one statement, I've played orcs and shooty eldar. I had no idea how best to use my marines. Also we use our own rules of engagement based off of 4th ed.

Round one:

Assassination - Take out enemy general and take on enemy objective. Diagonal deployments

Salamanders vs. Ravenguard

Shrike
10 man assault
Thunderfire
Whirlwind
3x speeders
1 x 10 man tac squad
1x 10 man scout squad
1x 10 man assault terminators
1x 10 man sternguard

Set up: He wins the dice off and goes first. Deploys his TFC and WW on his furthest back corner then splits tac squad and sternguard, putting them both in cover. At this point all I have on the board is my 3 Rhinos, not wanting to leave my Assault unit open to that much fire power. After I'm done he deciedes to infiltrate shrike as close as he can to my army which was a pretty sound strategy, his two scout squads were infiltrated into prime position to snatch my objectives. I make my normal seize the initiative roll and PASS! I could see the pain on his face

Round 1:

Movement - I drop in my Iron Clad, scatters a little off and winds up next to a ruin that's holding his Combat Squad, Sternguard w/Vulkan also scatters off target and lands directly infront of his Shrike unit which concerned me slightly. Rhino 1 moves forward and grabs his objective that has scattered almost into my deployment zone, Tac squad gets out careful to keep the rhino between them and the sternguard at this point. Rhino 2 moves forward and flanks the iron clad troops are still inside. Rhino 3 mimics Rhino 1 and prepares to unleash bolter hell on his combat scout squad. At this point his command squad is staring down an iron clad, a full unit of melta sternguard w/Vulkan, and a tac squad.

Shooting - Iron Clad launches a stream of fire into his command assault squad, two marines down, the Melta sends another one to the emperor. The sternguard open up with all their combi-meltas, had some misses but Vulkan rectified that and the entire squad was reduced to slag and with shrike needing his invulnerable 3 times it was a doomed cause. Objective 1 and 2 are in my hands at this point and it's not looking good for him. Tac Squad 1 opens up on the scouts in range, three die and they break. Tac Sqaud 3 mimics this while tac squad 2 pot shots a speeder and sends it burning into the dirt.

Assault - None

Movment B - Drops his pod with Iron Clad inside right infront of my sternguard. All the rest of his squads stay their ground, both scout squads auto rally and now the fighting starts.

Shooting B - Between his TFC, WW, Sternguard unit, and Ironclad w/dual HF I was down to my sternguard Srgt and Vulcan. His two speeders w/MM took an arm off my ironclad and managed to turn Rhino 2 into wreckage sending my squad 2 into the fray.

Assault B - None

Round 2: Neither my dread nore my Assault troops felt the battle was dire enough to enter.

Movement A - Nothing much along this front. Rhino 1 tankshocked one of his scout sqauds off the board, and Rhino 3 did the same. Ironclad moved up into assault range of his combat squad.

Shooting A - Tac squad 3 sent his second landspeeder crashing from combined melta shots from the srgt and melta gunner. Tac Squad 2 took the arm off of his dread. Sternguard Srgt and Vulkan fired into his second combat squad and managed two kills from a pistol round and the gauntlet of the forge. Ironclad opened up with a flamer and Melta combo shot and brought his second combat squad down to 3 but they held their ground.

Assault A - Vulkan and his final sternguard srgt charge into a combined combat with the tac squad and the dread, Vulkan was on the squad and the PF srgt was on the dread. My ironclad smashed into the team in the ruins. With Vulkan's immense weapon prowess the tac squad was annihilated before they launched a single attack. Meanwhile the battlehardened Sternguard vet avoided all possible damage from the iron clad, and in return destroyed it's vital components shutting the fighting tomb down. My Ironclad dread only managed a wound on the remaining members of the tactical squad, and even with no way to harm the behemoth they stood.

Movement B - His terminators waited another turn to take the field, however his landspeeder storm entered the fray.

Shooting B - WW, sternguard, and TFC attempted to annihilate Vulcan and his battle brother, to no avail. The land speeder storm's MM fired at Vulkan, however the mantle of the primarch shrugged off the blow. His other combat squaded sternguard managed to fell two salamanders.

Assault B - None

Round 3: My assault team lead by my chaplain enter the fray along with my dreadnought (which landed right next to his WW.

Movement A - Vulkan and his teammate prepare to obliterate a sternguard veteran combat squad. Tac squad 3 now positions itself to rain down fire on the combat sternguard squad that took two of their brothers.

Shooting A - The now arrived Dread made shortwork of the whirlwind. Tac Squad 3 brought the 5 man sternguard they were facing down to 3. Vulkan's Gauntlet of the forge claims three of the 5 sternguard he was facing across the field.

Assault A - Vulkan finishes off the sternguard he is facing. The ironclad claims another tactical marine, the last man stands defiant determined that his missile launcher barrel is harder than the forged body of the dreadnought.

Movement B - Both of his terminators squad come in, the serious CC is about to begin

Shooting B - Sternguard try to kill off some more of Tac Squad 3 and failed

Assault B - None for him. IC dread finishes off the last marine and prepares to assist in the destruction of the assault terminators.

Round 4: CC madness

Movement A - my assault marines and chaplain prepare to intercept terminator squad 1 from obliterating Tac Squad 1. Tac Sqaud 3 preps melta shots and bolters to assail terminator squad 2 while the IC dread and Tac squad 3 sweep around to form an impressive wall/gunline should the tactical marines falter.

Shooting A - Everything that I have that can fire does, mostly in futility. DP storm bolters fire to no avail, tac squad 1 fire melta and combi-melta and claim one terminator. Chaplain assault squad also fails to cause a casualty. The dreadnought opens fire on the Techmarine and TFC, the techmarine is killed.

Assault A - Chaplain assault squad slams into Terminator squad 1, His lightning claws tear through 3 assault marines, in return they destroy all the terminators. On the other side of the field tac marine 3 prepped for the assault.

Movement B - Terminator sqaud 2 predictably moves in for the kill

Shooting B - None

Assault B- Terminator Squad 2 lays waste to tac squad 3 not before the srgt claims a terminator for his own before succumbing to the rain of TH blows. They consolidate forward 6 inches into the fury of the shortrange gunline.

Round 5: We call the game here, His three terminators wouldn't last long enough to kill everything I have left on the board.

Objective 1: Kill Shrike - Done
Objective 2: Hold one of his objectives - Done

Major victory to me. Unfortunately that was the smoothest a game went for me the rest of the tournament
