Subject: Cavalry models in Infantry based units and ranks?

A question I've often come across in gaming circles and I've never had answered to my satisfaction is whether a unit of infantry joined by a cavalry based character should get all of its rank bonuses. Obviously the cav base pushes an infantryman out of the second rank. Does that one cav model get to count for a model in each the 1st and 2nd rank. I don't think it should, but many people say it does and can't tell me why.
This doesn't just apply to cav models. I know some characters have specific rules that allow them to continue ranks (e.g. slaan mage priest). So allowing other larger based models to not affect ranks in units seems crazy to me.
Am I just missing a rule somewhere that no one has yet been able to show me?

They faq'ed this a little while ago.
The cav model takes up one space in the front and one in the second rank, he counts as both so the second rank is full if there are 4 more models there.
Applies to all such models.

See FAQ part 2. They explain that there are 2 methods - either place to the side, or place in the unit and count displaced models.
Note a cavalry model should always count as 2 infantry, whether they are on 25mm or 20mm bases.

a put my HE bsb on a mount mainly to give him a better armour save. Carrying that special banner means that he can not carry any other magical stuff. And you want him to survive.

So what happens when he decides to leave the unit? You just lose 2 models?

Well, no, you lose one US2 model. The remaining models simply need to be rearranged.
Really, this isn't hard. Don't over-think.

it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.
