Obama writes girl a note for missing school

By RYAN J. FOLEY, Associated Press Writer
Fri Jun 12, 12:51 am ET

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Ten-year-old Kennedy Corpus has a rock-solid excuse for missing the last day of school: a personal note to her teacher from President Barack Obama.
Her father, John Corpus of Green Bay, stood to ask Obama about health care during the president's town hall-style meeting at Southwest High School on Thursday. He told Obama that his daughter was missing school to attend the event and that he hoped she didn't get in trouble.
"Do you need me to write a note?" Obama asked. The crowd laughed, but the president was serious.
On a piece of paper, he wrote: "To Kennedy's teacher: Please excuse Kennedy's absence. She's with me. Barack Obama." He stepped off the stage to hand-deliver the note — to Kennedy's surprise.
"I thought he was joking until he started walking down," Kennedy said after the event, showing off the note in front of a bank of television cameras. "It was like the best thing ever."
The fourth-grader at Aldo Leopold elementary in Green Bay already knew what she was going to do with the note: frame it along with her ticket to the event. She said she'd make a copy for her teacher.
Kennedy said she had never seen Obama before. "He's really nice," she said.

Sarcasm I hope?

That's actually a pretty funny story. I'm not always an Obama fan, but that was pretty cool of him. I would have been concerned if he had attached and "or else" clause on the note.

I heard the whole exchange on the news and it's a pretty funny encounter between the father of the girl and Obama.

House Health-Care Bill to Include $600 Billion in Tax Increases
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Laura Litvan

June 12 (Bloomberg) -- Health-care overhaul legislation being drafted by House Democrats will include $600 billion in tax increases and $400 billion in cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel said.

Democrats will work on the bill’s details next week as they struggle through “what kind of heartburn” it will cause to agree on how to pay for revamping the health-care system, Rangel, a New York Democrat, said today. He also said the measure’s cost will reach beyond the $634 billion President Barack Obama proposed in his budget request to Congress as a down payment for the policy changes.

Asked whether the cost of a health-care overhaul would be more than $1 trillion, Rangel said, “the answer is yes.”

House Democrats plan to release their legislation next week. Obama has made a health-care overhaul a top domestic priority and is working with Congress to get legislation to his desk by October.

Democrats in the House and Senate are working on legislation that would require all Americans to have health insurance, prohibit insurers from refusing to cover pre-existing conditions and place other restrictions on the industry.

The legislation would establish online exchanges for individuals to purchase insurance and would require employers to provide health benefits to workers or pay a penalty. Some Democrats also are backing creation of a government-run program to expand coverage to the uninsured. The issue is the subject of bipartisan negotiations with Republican opponents.

Big scandal as democrats involve other party in awkward yet necessary health care reforms shock.

You did get threadjacked.

$600Bn in increased taxes and $400Bn in cuts for existing healthcare for a new healthcare plan trumps writing little Susie a note.

Yes I have. Thats irrelevant.

Why cut $400Bn from Medicare for a new Health plan? Thats stupid (non US medicare/Medicaid are existing government healthcare plans for retirees and poor so this is cutting healtch care for this who need it to fund a pet project).

Beg to differ... it needs to NOT be done. I've got HMO's and PPO's denying claims now based on screwed up criteria, and every indication points to government handling the health care system worse than the private sector.

What NEEDS to happen is Congress needs to stop the spending orgy. NOW.

Because Medicare/Medicaid are horribly deficient, and redundant in an environment featuring fully socialized medicine. I would think you'd appreciate the move to do away with excess bureaucracy.

What indications are those?

That won't happen, at least not for some time. And even if it did, the damage in terms of future tax burden is already done.
