Subject: Spinefist Ripper Swarms, ever worth it?

Ok so for 170pts you have a unit that can produce (at a 12" Range) 30 Str 4 Ap5 TL shots and has 30 wounds. Granted they are only T3 and are swarms, but within Synapse range are immune to ID which should extend their lifespan consiberably. To get a comparable amount of shooting from Gaunts you have to spend 70 points more though they do have a BS of 3 as opposed to 2.
So has anybody tried this configuration with any luck? I've considered it and I have the Ripper Swarms to make it work, but I wanted to get some feedback before I tried. Granted I only see this as something I would do in a club game and would not run in a tourney as I would rather be spending points on genestealers.

Rippers, even under synapse range...are not immune to ID and cannot hold objectives; main reason I haven't bothered to try them.

Well I would say that answers that. Thanks for crushing my tiny Ripper dreams. I think I will save the Rippers for base decoration and an eventual Swarm token.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the input.

I used them in a tournement and loved them. Just a unit of 6 that had spinefists and bs and they did a fair bit of damage. I really liked them but it's up to the player.

Ask someone if you can proxy in a game or two...I wouldn't discredit them so fast. I would think anything they'd be good at killing, something else could kill it better...I only ever used swarms with leaping and held up shooty units. It'd be neat to see though.
