I've just finished reading the latest HH book and have to say it is a much needed addition to descent of angels and was actually rather good. Mike Lee's writing style is not too bad - there are a couple of points where it was a bit grating and it lacks any significant suspense but overall it still flowed well and it was quite a page turner. I no longer think descent of angels was worthless anymore as it is the prequel to this book, and there will definitely be at least one more dark angels HH book now - the end was clearly left open for this. I'd recommend picking this one up. You can get away with reading it if you've not read descent of angels, but you'll enjoy it more if you have read that book, or at least a detailed synopsis of it.

My biggest beef with the plot...
Spoiler:
One of the main characters is a librarian which annoys me - there is significant knowledge of Chaos which contrasts with some of the other books where librarians are clearly against the Emperor's will and Chaos is much more unknown and mysterious. I would expect this level of psychic ability from the thousand sons but not the Dark Angels.

And the best bit...
Spoiler:
Cypher gets a bit of background and simultaneously becomes a lot more mysterious.

That's revealing

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.

ok ok Didnt want to be too revealing but since it is spoiler tagged anyway....

Spoiler:
Turns out cypher was the last of the order of knights who had a massive library of chaotic books and knowledge. The order were destroyed by Johnson but cypher escaped and pretended to be a peasant, signed up for the dark angels knights order, rose through the ranks rapidly and because he was relatively unknown to the others, johnson appointed him as the new lord cypher so that there was little risk of corruption of cypher by cliques of other knights in the order. The book then contains lots of interesting plot twists and angles based around cypher's role.

I found this AWFUL. Second worst book, after Battle for the Abyss.

- It's another SPASSE MARINEZ HURRRR book, constant action instead of the intrigue we expect from HH books

- Mike Lee's writing style is confused - it's hard to keep track of the fight, especially space battles. It's also just plain BAD in places.

- The seem to know everything already about the warp, warp taint, psychic powers and the warp etc. The only thing they don't specifically mention is Chaos gods.

- Lion El'Jonson has absolutely no personality

- Nobody has any personality

- I think the way the Dark Angels talk to each other is a radically different from other HH books. They sound like joking guardsmen, instead of serious warrior monks. They're DARK ANGELS, not space wolves...

- The plot was completely pointless, the laboured and silly 'twist' at the end renders the whole book pointless. Besides, this event isn't mentioned anywhere else in fluff.

- Basically seemed like an excuse for another Space Marine Action Novel, with the 30th Millenium setting and Dark Angels conspiracy thown on afterwards.

Well what do you expect? It's the Horus Heresy, which was all about Spess Mehrens.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Yeah, but the other books in the series lend real character to space marines - they have to doubt themselves, and aren't the usual 'SHOOT EVERYTHiNG WE'RE INVINCIBLE" Space Marine novel.

Also, the fact that many of the main characters in HH aren't Space Marines lends them a different light.

Fallen Angels and Battle for the Abyss are guilty of just doing a 'standard' (or sub-standard) Space Marine Action Novel without any real personality, character and only a passing nod to the HH setting

I can see what you're saying but I think that fallen angels is still a fair bit better than battle for the abyss (which is in turn quite a bit better than descent of angels). I agree with what you are saying about the 'standard' space marine side of things, but think that luther and johnson give it a little bit more of an edge over the other two books. It is certainly far from the quality of abnett or mcneil's stuff though.

Ha Ha....oh you guys. I agree with ArbitorIan, but at the same time you guys have to realise this is a book about a game....now before you nail my balls to the wall, I don't mean that as any kind of excuse.....but I hear so often on this site that GW is all about the miniatures....and that the rules were created (sub par perhaps) simply to sell more miniatures!

So if they can't get a set of gaming rules to work (opinion, and not necessarily mine) then how the hell do expect these guys to be able to write a decent story!

I think your expectations are too high ArbitorIan.....

Man down, Man down....
