I've become a little disenchanted with my local gaming store (if you can call driving 45 mins to it local) and a few of its obnoxious patrons. I was wondering if anyone around this area (in reasonable distance) plays Warhammer 40k and Fantasy. Please let know.

Is the LGS you've become disenchanted with in Bangor or Gardiner? (Both about 45min away from Waterville)

If it is not the Gardiner Store, you can check them out at www.greenhousegamesonline.com

They have their own forums...no where near a good as here, but it is something...especially for Maine.

Forums located at...
http://greenhousegames.invisionplus.net/

If it is the Greenhouse you have come to dislike...I think there are 2 stores in Bangor.

I've become disenchanted with both, honestly (greenhouse first). Greenhouse games is a basically a private club (which needs a good cleaning). The one in Bangor, 3 geek gaming, is turning into one (also needs a good cleaning). Both have loud mouth individuals that should have their mouth stapled or sent to a time out room for be idiots.

I know a cool bunch of dudes in Rockland that play but they are to far away unfortunately (they just love to play, and that's what I'm looking for). So basically I am looking for a niche of players, each with several armies to mix it up and aren't looking to keep others out of the group.

Yeah, Like most gamers in general, the Greenhouse could use a good cleaning.
The owners are both very busy with the gamestore being 3rd or 4th on their priority list.
I don't get down there nearly enough...maybe 3 or 4 times a year.
I've done what I can to help, Setting up their webpage and Forums, with the limited HTML skills I have.
Running open Battletech games once a month a few years ago, to try and generate business.

Keeping a game store running, especially in this economy, with the ease of internet / ebay is a feat in itself.
But yeah, one or two loud mouths can ruin a customers experience. I'm sorry you have the feeling that the G-House is a private club. Many of the regulars have been around for a long (10+ years) time - and have developed a built in filter to ignore the loudmouths.

Getting a 40k game going there can be like pulling teeth at times. They only had 8 show up for Ard boys in '08, and only 4 this year (wife had other plans so I couldn't make it). I do know there are two new 40k players that just started playing there. Both just joined the G-House forums and are looking for other people to play with. One plays Black Templars, not sure about the other one. I think they are both about your age too. I can't speak for everyone, but a good percentage of the guys playing 40k at the g-house are willing to play with new people. Sorry you got the "Private club" impression.

Resurrecting this topic. I play with a group of people in the Skowhegan area, we have six players. One plays Orks and Black Templar, and then the others play Imperial Fists, Chaos Space Marines, Necrons, Tau and Tyranids.

Add an Imperial Guard and another Necron player to that list.

Jeff - Imperial Fists (4000+ Points) - Norridgewock
Jake - Necrons (1000+ - Points) - Waterville
Kory - Tau (4000+ Points) - Madison
Joe - Tyranids (2500 + - Points) - Skowhegan
Imperial Guard (5000+ Points) - Skowhegan
Black Templar (5000+ Points) - Cornville
Orks (10000+ Points) - Cornville
Chaos Space Marines (3000+ Points) - Rome
Necrons (2500+ Points) Madison

Always looking for more to add to the list,

Thanks,
Jeff.

Interesting thread. So, Backdraft has three places to game and two do not meet his style. A third he claims is great, but too far (Rockland is only a little further and seems worth the drive for the "stated" great guys - another problem?).

So, perhaps Backdraft005 is the common problem.

I have seen many gaming stores that host gaming areas and they are all cluttered and somewhat dirty. Gamers haul in loads of stuff and leave piles of food and food wrappers at the end of the day. It is a huge task for store owner to deal with. Stores that have been around for more than ten years find it gets ahead of them.

I have also seen really nice clean stores in nice high rent locations. Sadly, the owner tends to burn-out or seeks another "Real Paying" job and closes after 5-10 years. Please posts the few exceptions.

Stores all have different mixes of gaming personalities and not every person is going to be a perfect fit. While he complains of the "private club" setting, it is indeed the game side of the store he seeks to belong to, i.e "the club". Perhaps Backdraft should get a Prius and extend hisdriving range, find non-personalities via play-by-mail, online gaming, or take-up knitting.

Sadly, Greenhouse Games missed an opportunity to make a new gamer feel welcome and keep the shop trolls under control and acting nice.

However, a shop could likely kiss his butt all day and will never hold up to the Nirvana game location he seeks.

Resurrecting this thread to say I just moved back up to Thomaston from NJ and am desperate to find players in my area. Someone mentioned a group of players in Rockland, are they still active? Can someone put me in touch with them?

I am a Chaos player. I have a Nurgle-themed army and am in the process of building a Khorne Daemonkin army. I am a relatively new player, so I would love to find people for regular friendly games.

If you're within an hour or so of Thomaston, feel free to contact me to see if we can play some time!

I live in central Maine, an hour or so north of you. I used to play Warhammer 40k, but could be eased back into the game. I have tried Bangor's Citadel Gaming but it is only MTG and Malifaux there (I have yet to bring my X-Wing models there to play with that community). I didn't even know there was a Geek Gaming store as I just moved here. At the very least I could be talked into visiting either store with you to play so there is a centralized location to attract other players too.

3 geek is long gone. Closed like 4 years ago. You certainly aren't missing anything pretty much all asshats there. Game Citadel is ok, I've played there a few times. Only issue as usual is MtG is what keeps his doors open, so alot of their time and effort go into that front. The malifux crew is pretty small too, like 2 to 4 guys on a semi weekly basis. Got a couple friends in the area that play but it's super hard to find a game with the shop not trying to push the hobby. All it would take is some demo games and events...

Hi I saw this post and figure I would put this out there. I am over in bethel and have a table, I know it's a wicked hike to get from waterville area to here, but I offer a friendly environment for good people to have fun. I to have had some beat experiences with some gaming clubs, and feel the attitude coming from some is probably the reason we witness a decline in gamer's. So if anyone wants to make the trip out this way let me know

I know of 2 game stores for 40k near that area, Game Citadel in Bangor and GW Cornerbrook Plaza in Portland. I'm located in Houlton and have made the trip to bangor a few times, I think they only allow 40k on weekends though, so I just built my own table at home but I have nobody to play with here.

How far is houlton to bethel? Takes me almost 2 hours to get to Portland or Standish or any where really, and work is pretty heavy these days so rarely get off the farm, but have a nice table here

@forgotten ghosts It's far, almost 4 hours but I figured I'd put it out there. Maybe some other Maine gamers would see it and be interested.
