Anyone heard of this movie? I just got back from a preview session of it and it seems like it would be the type of movie that DakkaDakka would like. It's a good movie though, I won't go into plot details after looking up the actual release dates. But, I didn't really like the ending.

Not really spoilers for the movie, just a comment about the ending. But, it does still kind of seem like spoilers to me so I'll block it out.
Spoiler:
The ending is left very open and seems like there could be a sequel

Yeah it looks interesting. Not one I'd go to the cinema for (I'm against Cinemas) but one to watch eventually.

Armies:
(CSM/HH) - Iron Warriors; Death Guard; World Eaters; Night Lords
IG - Vestfalian Expeditionary
Force (Solar Auxilia - HH)
SM - Blades of Inaros (Homebrew)
DE - Kabal of Ouroboros

OK sorry-you saw the film in the entirety yes? If so then

Is it preachy? The ads look good but I am wary of getting hit with the Preachhammer(TM) about how inclusion is good and we should celebrate our differences.

-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

Yep saw the entire thing. It does seem to have a strong political message to get across but it's not entirely "everyone should get along now learn tolerance". The message is kind of subtle, but you know it does sometimes lets you know it's there. It's just not in your face there; it's blended in well with the movie. The aliens also don't seem to have a name for their race, they're only called by the racist term (you'll probably laugh the first time you hear it, although I could think of a more appropriate term for them) that was made up for them. But, your opinion may vary. I don't consider it preachy.

If anyone wants spoilers I'll only post them in a PM.

It's good, you know it's telling a message, but it doesn't wreck it. Action scenes are good, better than Transformers at times.

Oh there's action involved?

Yep, there's a fair bit of it at times. But, it's not just an entire action sequence with the story parts tacked on last minute. Too bad I'll have to wait a couple of days before people can start talking about it

I've been interested since I saw the first trailer and watched the director's short film, Alive in Joburg.

When I saw the first trailer it looked like a faux documentary. Then I saw the second trailer and it was more conventional. So which is it?

What do you mean by conventional?
It was kind of a mix, it had documentary parts to kind of help set up the backstory to bring the audience up to speed with what has happened and also to build suspence.

By conventional I mean a mostly linear plot that's happening in real time as opposed to everything already happened and we're piecing it together from interviews.

Then yep it is a mix of both of those.

I was interested, but at the same time worried that it would turn into a guilt tripping preachfest that certain movies tend to turn into where the story and plot are just a vehicle for the directors political views. If that isn't the case I may go check it out.

About to eat your Avatar...

Hmmm...

I can't imagine it being bad, but I am preparing myself for a psuedo-scientific metaphorical screenplay, along with at least 5 million dollars to much of forced CGI scenes.

Are there going to be real costumes in this? I would be pretty disappointed if everything was just CGI transformers action garble.

The previews made it look like the movie was liable to turn into "evil humans are racist against peaceful aliens, and want to build bigger bombs with their technology", in which case I wouldn't really want to waste my time on it.

That kind of crap is more cliched than the "aliens want to exterminate humanity and the government tries to protect us", simply on account of how badly it wants to be bucking the cliches.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

It got my interest when I saw signs for it in San Fran. Like in early June I was seeing sings that said Humans only and to report Aliens and then I saw Alien only areas. At first I thought it was a game of some sorts cause like the posters were half torn down and only on random side walls of building.

It seems to be CGI, but it's done well.

Actual spoiler.
Spoiler:
Especially the robot fight scene, although the pilot is really crap. Kind of like the Tau stuff though

Looks way better than Transformers. The movie is kind of a metaphor though, but to say what it's a metaphor for would be to kind of ruin the movie as the way it's set up in the ads can lead to either they attack or they don't.

If it isn't aligned to any current political agenda, it's less likely to seem like a pretentious cash in to me, but if it's too heavily down on humanity as a whole then I wouldn't enjoy it much. Fatalism and cynical distrust of humanity don't really, erm, entertain me.

I just got back from seeing it, and it seems to me that the scenes where the aliens are mistreated are what would happen whenever you have a corrupt corporation hiring scumbag mercenaries to oppress a minority on their behalf. If the ship would have come to rest above Los Angeles, it would be the LAPD tormenting them while Mexicans sold them catfood and guns. I hope there's a sequel, because I was left with lots of questions. However, it is an intensely entertaining movie.

Is there a well-meaning human character torn between his love for his people and disappointment with their behaviour towards the aliens who desperately tries to resolve their issues peacefully just to succumb to DRAMA when they start fighting?

Please say no.
