This was a present for a friend of mine, as a congratulation for his passing his college course. He always has really bad luck with plasma weapons in-game, so I made him a variant on the old Marine-looking-away-from-his-plasma-gun joke. However, he said that he was thinking of using Pedro Kantor in his Fists list, so I modified it to be able to take different arms with magnets, and the head also rotates. Most importantly, this model has taught me that I HATE painting yellow.



God damn I hate painting Yellow.

What technique did you use to paint it?

I have multiple bottles of the old Yellow Ink. That ink over white primer works awesome.

The yellow doesn't look very good to me, it's far too lemony and pale. Imperial Fists are more of a golden-yellow colour.

The shading looks pretty odd to me. It looks like you just mixed in some brown and slopped it on. The work on the highlighting is good, but the colour is completely off.

This will sound like I'm making excuses (since, well, I am), but I basically tried to colour-match the model to my friend's army. This meant using Golden Yellow over Tausept Ochre, and then shading with the old GW Brown Ink. I'm not super fond of the brown, but black lining would stand out way too much.

IMO the biggest mistake I made was using the classic Yellow wash, which sucks balls. It's slightly green, doesn't cover well, and didn't blend my highlights at all how I expected it to. Before the wash it was a much better golden yellow. Some of the sloppy brown is the unfortunate result of having to cover the pooled yellow ink in recesses. If I'd had a bit more time, I'd have considered stripping it and starting over, but I basically had about 4 days from start-finish until I next saw the friend in question. I would say I'll take the crits on board next time I paint yellow, but it's much more likely I won't paint anything else yellow.

Yellow is A hard color to paint. I use white primer when painting something yellow. it looks good.

My only criticism is that the tube going to the storm bolter changes color half way through.

swbruni - Yeah, I'd normally use a white undercoat given the choice, but I was trying to copy my friend's colours so I painted them the way he'd done his.
