Brighthammer 40k is a mirror universe of Warhammer 40k. In this setting, the incredibly GRIMDARKness of regular 40k is replaced by NOBLEBRIGHTness and instead of war, there is only HIGH ADVENTURE!
From http://1d4chan.org/wiki/BrightHammer40k

Dakka, I ask you. Would you like 40k if it were more... NOBLE/BRIGHT and less GRIM/DARK?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

A new day, a new time zone.

It's always a good day when I see Kharn in the commissar's hat.

Kill it with fire.

Kill it now. Before the cancer takes hold.

If you want a serious answer:

I can actually understand why the 40k universe needs to be so GRIMDARK. It's because we all need an excuse as to why the universe is constantly locked in an eternal war, and thus why our respective table top armies are always killing each other.

On the other hand, there are times when 40k fluff gets so GRIMDARK that it becomes just downright silly instead of cool or awesome as the writer thought it would be. My favorite example is when I read that it takes 1,000 recruits to make 1 Space Marine - the other 999 either end up insane, crippled, or dead. That's 999 perfectly able bodies that could have been drafted into the Imperial Guard. I know a single Space Marine is supposed to be awesome, but there is much to be said about 1,000 men with lasguns.

Another example is how Eldar are so concerned about the lives of their own people that they are perfectly willing to destroy several Imperial planets for the sake of only a handful of Eldar lives...
...only to send them to the front lines as Guardians armed with short-ranged Eldar shotguns and cardboard-thin armor to be meatshields that die as easily as Guardsmen.

Now this bit of fluff is defunct, I think, but once upon a time (in the Rogue Trader days I think) the Imperium killed anybody who had any contact whatsoever with Daemons in order to keep it a secret from the unwashed masses. They specifically cited an example where an Imperial Guard regiment managed to successfully crush a Daemon invasion - only to be nuked into oblivion from an orbiting Inquisition ship in order to keep the secret from getting out. Any Marine Company that also had contact with Daemons, and managed to win the battle, were "brainscrubbed" into mindless drooling idiots.

I remember reading a passage in my own IG codex about a Valhallan officer that marched his troops across a minefield as a quick way to detect and "disable" those mines to guard their precious tanks. I guess in an era of space-age warfare where gigantic armies zip throughout the galaxy to commit themselves to a crusade, they haven't figured out how to hitch a ride on those space ships to get across a minefield.

That's just a few examples. There are other times when things get so over the top that 40k unintentionally starts to parody itself.

So, the Brighthammer is the Eldar version of a Tankhammer then? (Brightlance shaped into a hammer) jk

Back on topic, I somewhat agree with Signal. Sometimes things get dark enough to be funny, and they lose their impact. I don't think Orks ever quite got to this point (of course, their darkness was always MEANT to contain some humor)

Kharn Boner?!?!?!? WTH!?!?!

MY EYES BLEED!

But, in all seriousness, I think 40k is fine as it is. (Fluff wise, at least)

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.
