They are not a great unit, and cost a lot for what they do.

Q: How many of a specific demographic group are required to carry out a simple task?
A: An arbitrary number. One to carry out the task in question, and the remainder to act in a manner stereotypical of the group.

In terms of background, theme, and fluff? Absolutely. While Ogryns aren't native to Catachan, they get along very well according to the old Catcahan Codex, with Catachan regiments appropriating more Ogryns than they're normally alloted.

In terms of in game effectiveness? I'd proxy them first, before you drop $100+ on a unit that is pretty one dimensional. They're close combat units that struggle against anything with a S10 or a good armor save.

The land of cotton.

Fluff wise? Yes, absolutely.

Effectiveness per $$$? Questionable. I'd echo the idea of a Proxy trial. Get some 40mm bases and just call them Ogryns for a test game against your chums and see how they work out. You never know, you might hit on a good use for them.

No.

Build up the rest of your army first (infantry, chimeras, tanks), and then buy the specialist units.

This is what I did,
http://www.coolminiornot.com/227064

Costs me lots less than the real thing and I think mine looks just fine. I used grenade launchers as ripper guns.

Anyhow, like mentioned before, they struggle with anything with a good armor save (2+, 3+). But the amount of attacks they can dish out is pretty nice and against horde armies, they can be a wreck.

Keep in mind that it's a big commitment, squad of 5 with chimera with lord commissar(minimum combo) is about 335, so you have to think carefully about taking them and when you do, put them to good use.

I have had a lot of fun using 5 of them with Yarrick. Don't charge the assault termies with them, but they are a GREAT diversionary unit and do very well in counterassault. You have to be careful with them because of their high cost, but properly used (with Yarrick) they can be devastating.
