Was debating the points costs and abilities of Pegasus Knights, when a thought struck me:

I can make Pegasus Knights for my Empire. 1 Pegasus Capt w Lance, Plate, Shield is roughly 116pts.

Now this leaves me at US2 vs US6, but point for point wouldn't a Cpt be better than the Unit (WS, S/T, Attacks, Ld, options)?

Or am I dreaming of Bretonnians?

I think that you would be better off comparing the Capasus (Empire Captain on Pgasus) with a Bret hero on pegasus, as they are much closer in role.

The Empire captain on pegasus is (usually) carrying Aldreds casket of sorcery and either the enchanted shield, plate armour and lance OR Blade of might, plate armour, shield. He flies around march blocking and stealing spells, but can take on light units and fast cav.

The bret captain is more offensive and is usually a character assassin or light unit hunter.

The pegasus knights are medium to heavy cav that flies.

Bear in mind that the pegasus heroes are actually US4 - 3 from monstorous mount and 1 from rider.
The peg knight unit has some clear advantages over the hero in couple of places, first major thing being 360" los and 2nd being that they are generally more durable as you can't shoot/magic/kill the soft pegasus off as you can with the heroes. All that said, it's a bit problematic to compare choices between books (especially if you're just playing empire in this case).

But I guess what I'm getting at is I can spend less points for something to do the same job?

So taking 2 Capasus and using them "like" pegasus knights a bad idea?

Well, if you consider the empire armylist, taking captasus or 2 isn't too bad an idea, as there isn't other (non-special-character) flyer as an option for harassing/warmachine hunting purposes. I've noticed that in tighter lists one may not have the character slots to spend as people try to squeeze in couple of mages to support the popemobile and bsb/priest in addition. Also great cannons being deadly vs. opposing warmachines works a bit against the captasus.

Well, the group is only up to 1k pts atm. I'll have to play test a bit and see what I come up with.

Sorry for the slight hijack, But do the bret pegasus knights get 360 vision? I thought they would have had the front arc due to the base size.

Also to get OT I agree that the character vs unit comparison is slightly off as they do have different roles.

Hero's don't have 360* sight?

I've always stuck them in a unit, so I guess it hasn't come up.

Pegasus knights are a skirmishing unit, hence the 360 LoS.

If they are monsters or ride horses or bigger stuff, they generally don't have 360 LoS anymore.

I don't have a book handy at work, but do they simply move as skirmishers per the flyers rule or do they have the Skirmishers special rule? They certainly don't get the -1 to hit, as that is for man sized models on foot, and if they don't have the skirmishers special rule they won't get the 360 line of sight either.

Edit: typos

Pegasus Knights -> Unit of Flying Cavalry -> Work as unit of flyers -> Unit of flyers work as unit of skirmishers

Yup. They are in all ways a skirmishing unit. Which makes them fantastically flexible and mobile.

They don't get the -1 to hit from shooting as that is limited to US 1 skirmishers.
