I'm jumping on the Dan Abnett bandwagon as well. The Ghosts series was awesome, but my personal favorite was the Eisenhorn trilogy. It was an epic storyline, with intriguing characters.

I haven't, however, read any of the Iron Snakes novels, so I don't know how he handles Space Marines...
