Say I have 2 units of 10 marauders, facing each other, against the board edge, 3" apart. One has its left flank against my board edge, the other has its right flank against the board edge [so that their sides are facing the enemy's board edge, and they're looking at each other]. Someone charges one of the units. They win combat, and pursue off-table. On my turn, the other unit marches, and makes a complete wheel, "shutting the door" on the point at which the unit exited the table.

Is the enemy unit destroyed next turn when it can't appear on the table due to enemies? Is it in stasis until it CAN come back, giving them a chance to remove the unit? Assuming that's the case, if they fail to then does the unit die at the end of the game if they're not on the table?

Oh, wait....it says as close as possible...so I can't close the door on them and kill them off the table, can I? Damn ><

Nope, as you say - in this case "as close as possible" would be 1" away from your troops.
