I've been using salamanders (up to 2250 points 1 unit of 2), and 1 unit of 3 at 2500+ points, primarily as I don't have the razordon minis.
Benefits of salamanders OVER razordons:
No need to worry about roll to hit (you have the same chance of a misfire)
Cause panic with 1 wound
Flamer templates can = win when you get about 6-8 inches away and start flaming infantry or low T cav.
-3 to armour save
If partials become auto hit with 8th ed as skaven template weapons have become, salamanders are going to be 'must haves'.
Downside:
Can't stand and shoot (from memory)
Why Razordons are better:
Stand and shoot can be awesome.
St 4 shots
Downside:
Roll to hit.
Lets say you take 2- Average 10 shots, 5 will hit normal enemies. Much less than the usual roll I've done with salamanders.
In the end I think razordons are more reliable, but end up being worse as their reliable ability is much worse than the 'average' salamander shot.
