Between the VI login song and the Stick Figure Spotlight videos, I've been convinced to have a go at this game. I gave Johnno the credit for the recommendation.
I've played DOTA at LAN parties before, where my favourite hero was the Goblin miners for the "you-know-that-I-know" games that let you pretend to be luring someone into a trap to make them turn and run away into your trap. Is there a similar sort of character in LoL, or should I just look for the girl with the power fists?

Teemo is kind of as close as LoL gets to tekkies. His ultimate is basically you put down an explosive invisible mushroom. They step on it and they take significant damage over time and are slowed. They last for ten minutes when placed and provide sight.
I'm looking for a second Champ. I like Annie, but I think I'd like someone that can take a hit. Still looking at the 450 IP recommendations. Might pick up Sivir, anyone have any experience with her?

Sivir might be the opposite of being able to take a hit I picked her up early on ... and have played her almost never, but that was before confirming my tank fetish. Also that I'm not very good at ranged
That said, just bought Swain, playing first time now!

I'm sure she doesn't crumple as well as Annie does...

My first bugbear with this game: Apparently you're supposed to tell the installer twice where you want the game installed. Now I've got 3.5 gigs on the right partition and 3.5 gigs on the C drive.

Says the guy who has all his skins, because, y'know, I love them all.
I got Cassio yesterday and have been playing around with her a bit. Learning mid at lvl 30 is a painful curve, but I'm getting the hang of it, and I lvoe the sheer dps she can put out at any given time.
Wow, there are a lot of 450 champs now! As far as sturdy champs go, Ryze is about as hardy a caster as you can get. This is primarily because he gains power from his mana pool, which means you can just buy mana items and tanky mana items rather than AP.
For overall sturdiness, Poppy is extremely hard to beat. Her ult makes her immune to all but the targeted champion- so if you zap the support with it, you can run rampant through the enemy team with impunity for 6 seconds. Once she has Sheen, she will mess you up. Sadly, her laning phase is appalling, so expect a large learning curve.
Garen is recommended for a reason. He is thick and tanky, has a satisfying ultimate, a silence, and spin-to-win, plus no mana or energy to slow you down. If you want them to drive you closer so you can hit them with your sword, this is the champion for you.
There is a niche build out there for a tanky yi.... but I really can't recommend it, especially for new players. Just like Katarina, you have to pick him when the enemy team is really weak on CC, and for that you need a lot of familiarity with the other champions.
To summarize- you can't go wrong with Ryze for caster, or Garen for melee bruiser. Poppy will be challenging to lane with, but is always very tanky.
I hope that helps!

I played for the longest time with the plan that "I'll see how far I can get without spending money"
I just broke down, bought some RP and am now slowly unlocking all the champions (playing with them a bit before I move on to the next). It's so different having access to 40+ as opposed to ~15!
If anyone wants to play, my name is YotsubaSnake. I'd love to join others to play!
If you're good with Sivir she can take a decent hit with her spell shield. Like most carries you won't be a tank but items like bloodthirster will keep you around a little longer with life steal.
For tanks out of the 450s, probably Ryze is the best to go with. He's not really a tank, but pretty much all the decent tank items give mana so he'll finish the game as one anyway. You'll have maybe one item that gives mana that will not be making you more of a wall.
There's also Nunu I think. He's more or less a support tank now, but he can deal decent damage when you consider he has his E and his ultimate as his only damage dealing abilities. His Q also does damage of course, but only true damage and to minions, it then heals him scaling alright with AP. Think of it as a smite that heals you. His W adds movement speed and attack damage to you and the target (you'll see a lot of Nunus that use it on themselves for some reason even though it would effect them anyway if they cast it on someone else). His E is this large ice ball which deals decent damage and slows (Rylai's makes it slow even more), this is generally seen as his most annoying move as if you're fighting a Nunu this is going to be poking you so much. When you decide to run, throw one last one at them so they can't chase so well.
Nunu's ultimate is interesting. People usually joke about how you press R, make a coffee and then come back to watch your ultimate go off. He sits there creating a large area of slow (once again Rylai's making this almost like a root at times) and charges up to its max damage which is pretty significant. You can cancel it any time by moving and it will explode earlier still dealing damage. Another fun thing to remember is even though its this giant swirling snowstorm of "gtfo or die", the enemy can't see it if Nunu is hiding in a bush while doing it or even if they just can't see Nunu. So those tiny bushes near baron and dragon? Suddenly the entire enemy team is going slow, the ones paying attention are going to turn and try to run. The others are just going to go through it and take the full 1k+ damage from it.
Been trying to pick up Amumu recently as well. Grabbed him one game and killed everyone somehow. Then sad robot came on sale and I had to grab it. Meant to build as a tank, but I end up with more or less an AP bruiser.

Im very hot and cold with Malphite. I either kick some major ass, or do squat. I seem to barely hurt Master Yi, so when I see him being played, I hope I get tossed against him But overall I really enjoy Malphite, the guy can seriously dish out damage. I think its fun to charge into a x2 or x3 blob of summoners that have been pushing longer then they should have? Then BOOM! I start hitting all of them at the same time with several attacks. Its glorious
Automatically Appended Next Post: Although now Im saving up for either an assassin or a tank, and Im not sure which champ to use for either one

Tanky Malphite is super fun to play. Just build him up.
Anybody looking for fun and powerful tanks to play, I suggest Mundo. He can be a really great support tank. You learn how to throw that cleaver. He is also a good jungler.
Amumu is probably my favorite tanky character. His initiate is easily one of the best in the game. Bandage wrap in to enemy group and use your ultimate, watch your team roll in and punish them for being caught. The only problem with him is, he is easily shut down in the jungle. Also, he is one of those champs that rarely gets played outside of jungling, so for you new guys, that might not be something you can do at that level.
I've had a go with Vi against bots, and she was great in one-on-one, but had a really hard time disengaging when things weren't in her favour. Whenever someone started running, the combination of Assault and Battery, Excessive Force and Vault Breaker ensured that they would die anyway. But when I tried to run, I wasn't benefiting from the ~65% lifesteal I'd built up.

Olaf is another great jungler. Just build him tanky with some AD and watch the kills roll in. However, you need to know how to throw hes q, and use his ult.

I got the quadra-kill pretty luckily, and then katarina popped out in front of me, and instead of flaying my squishy hide, she ran and I killed her for the penta.

I had a double kill with Annie on Sunday, and my teammate was like, "wath annie?! gj" I told him that he did half the work on Ashe, and that he probably would have gotten the kill if Ezreal didn't come and kill him first.
I rarely get kills, let alone double ones

Heres a tip for annie: Her passive says that every 4th spell she uses on will stun the enemy. The idea is that when its the 4th spell, or the stunning one, thats when you drop Tibbers on them. Does that make sense?

And a good Olaf won't die as long as he knows roughly what damage he does at what hp %. That and his ult being great at escaping with.
Don't worry about pentas unless you're playing a carry.

It does, I'll remember that

So I won't be able to mouse it over to the sweet group of mobs and click cast, and watch Annie waddle over there and cast it? :( sad day.
