Darn good film, even if the tanks were all wrong.
Has anyone made a similarly good film on MacArthur?

I loved 'Patton'. George C. Scott made one hell of a legendary performance. There'll never be another one like him RIP.
The tanks definitely were wrong but at least they used the tanks the Army named after the general; the M47 Patton.
'MacArthur' in comparison is a much weaker film and the actor doesn't captivate the audience but 'Patton' does stand pretty tall compared to most movies anyway. 'MacArthur' is still worth a viewing but go in with low expectations.

Watching 'Patton' and then the recent remake of 'Inherit the Wind' back to back was pretty amusing. George C. Scott was a hell of an actor.

Well to be honest Patton was one hell of a general, MacArthur was a general from hell. 'MacArthur' cannot do justice to the truth because it doesn't slag him off remotely enough, show how indecisive or incompetent he was and how his success was based almost entirely on subordinate commanders and a lot of spin. The film makes him out to be a hero, when in fact he fethed up in Korea and wasn't much good in WW2. The account of his poor relationship with Truman is fairly good, but then Truman was smart. Now with 'Patton', you see what you get, get the character right as George C. Scott certainly did and you carry the film on the strength of the lead cast.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

GCS was the man. I really liked him as the detective in Exorcist III.

He didn't die in the crash but in the hospital 13 days later....
On December 9, 1945, Patton was severely injured in a road accident. He and his chief of staff, Major General Hobart R. "Hap" Gay, were on a day trip to hunt pheasants in the country outside Mannheim. Their 1938 Cadillac Model 75 was driven by Private First Class Horace Woodring (1926–2003), with Patton sitting in the back seat on the right side, with General Gay on his left, as per custom. At 11:45 near Neckarstadt (Mannheim-Käfertal), a 2½ ton GMC truck driven by Technical Sergeant Robert L. Thompson made a left turn in front of Patton's Cadillac. Patton's car hit the front of the truck, at a low speed.
At first the crash seemed minor, the vehicles were hardly damaged, no one in the truck was hurt, and Gay and Woodring were uninjured. However, Patton was leaning back with trouble breathing. The general had been thrown forward and his head struck a metal part of the partition between the front and back seats, incurring a cervical spinal cord injury. Paralyzed from the neck down, he was rushed to the military hospital in Heidelberg. Patton died of a pulmonary embolism on December 21, 1945. The funeral service was held at the Christ Church (Christuskirche) in Heidelberg-Südstadt.
