Ok so Im sorry about starting a thread with no pictures, I dont mean to be that I guy but I need some ideas... Dont worry though the model has been ordered and should arrive tomorrow and I will then post pics and get started! However I need some ideas for model colors... I run my army as pure khorne and am working on getting 4 FW models, 1 for each faction of chaos. This model gets to be my Khorne Model...

The armour will be red as well as symbols... The Howda will be wood odviously... but as for the skin Im not 100% positive... My army is located in the Northern lands and as such have snow based... All of the fur in my army tends to be black with a fairly heavy grey highlight... Im thinking about doing a very light grey or even a white for the skin...

What does everyone suggest for going about doing this? What would be your color choices for the model? How would you go about your choice? etc etc... Im not the best painter so please remember that... Im still very much so learning so any help there is appreciated too. Also if you have any suggestions on painting bone (tusks and claws mainly) that would be very appreciated! I am horrible at it currently and tend to only do a grey or tan with washes!

Ah finally! Can't wait to see it built.

As for painting bone, layering is the way that works best for me. Depending on what you want, you can make the bone color with a brown or grey look to it. If you get a chance look at the GW site. The TK and VC skeletons are painted a little different (TK's being more brown opposed to Vamp. Skeletons being more bleached).

I think you'd be best off painting the 'plainer', large striated parts of the tusks and the hooves a rather browny tone, fading to bleached bone at the tips. The middle section of the tusks look like the screaming, swirling tzeentch heads. Since you're not doing it as undivided but as khorne, I'd paint that so it looks like carvings the warriors have made into the tusk of the mammoth while it still lives. So do that a much paler tone, probably start with bleached bone washed down and then highlighted back up. You wouldn't need to do a fade for them since it would all have been carved comparatively recently to an even depth.

I think the skin could look good in a pale grey. It's something different, it will add some contrast, and it will look good against the red that I presume you will be bringing in to the armour plates and such (since again, it's khorne).

Ah, thank you for the insight Morgrim... my thoughts were exactly as yours... was either going for a white or pale grey and I figured white would be much harder and wouldnt look quite right... the armour will indeed be red with a trim of boltgun metal washed in devlan mud (rather than the normal gold) and those sound like good ideas for the tusks and such. I was also thinking of doing that wierd blistery rot part a bright blue to contrast the white even further... think that will look good?

Yeah Luna, Im impressed also >.< Im only going to have to pin the tusks, trunk, and back part of the howda... other than that it all work just fine! Saves me alot of trouble. Im quite pleased to say the least... Hows the pinning on that Mega Dread going? Since I see you got it not too long ago ?

EDIT: I got it just in time for our giant Seige Game tomorrow so Ill take some pics of the beasty (and his family) in action! My opponent is being generous enough to further let me use the Dragon, Mammoth, and Giant Spined, on top of the already double points I get from being the attacker... 10,000 points vs 5000... should be fun!

I was thinking that the nurgly bits should be just done as healed scars, but that massive one on the hind quarters is way too big to get away with that. You're pretty much forced to do it as some mutation. The pale blue could work, although I'd be careful about it clashing with the other colours. Maybe stick to the blue-greys GW does, to blend into the skin? (Space Wolf Grey, Shadow Grey, Fenris Grey. Although I think that shadow grey is the absolute darkest you should go. Really have to see it with the rest of the model to tell, I'd do your base coats before deciding on final colours for all the uncertain bits. At least it should be easier than your dragon, in that respect.

Yeah thats true, so just do the scars and wot nots as a lighter skin? or possibly darker? and as for the mutation maybe I should just do it a bright red with ard coat... this would still pop out very nicely on the pale skin and it would also fit in better. I dont necessarily want it to blend in however... its a giant chaos growth thing and I think it needs to pop out on the model as it is just a really awsome detail.

What do you think I should do on painting the skin? I am priming the model white mind you, so this should probably make it easier. However Im not exactly sure how to achieve a nice pale skin on such a large surface.

As you command... moar pics! These were from a giant Siege game me and Warmonger had on Saturday. I forgot to take pictures throughout the game but the mammoth definitely got his points back!

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I have all day to work on the model so I will post progress tonight. Probably going to pin the tusks and trunk, take pics, then wash it :O

You can see it looming over everything else... as well as the dragon on the otherside O.o

Ok so Ive pinned the two tusks but only one is glued in until after I paint, to make things easier. Also got the model washed and most of the flash and big block things are filed down so its nice and ready! Im thinking about leaning away from the pale skin as Im not sure how well i can pull it off. So what would you guys (and gals) suggest for colors? Id definitely like to stick with the red armor and black fur. But what about the skin? A dark brown, light brown? You tell me. Will post new pics as soon as possible.

Ok, quick update. I Spent an hour or so today, chopping off and sanding down all the gates (big blocks or resin on the side of nearly every piece) and thank gosh I got a dremel for christmas otherwise it would have taken much longer.

I must also thank the wonderful wash rag (didnt have a proppa dust mask so the being the mek boy I am, I folded a wash rag in to a triangle and tide some string to mah face!) that saved my life probably due to all the resin dust and wot nots that went everywhere (I kid you not when I say that my table is covered in resin dust now O.o)

So Its pretty much ready for a painting, I just need to wait till this crappy rainy weather stops and I will go ahead and prime it white. I decided Im going to do the skin a really dark brown, fur will be black, armour will be red, and the howda will be a lighter brown color. As soon as I get it primed I will post some pictures of it! At this point all I can say is wow... when I built my mammoth I didnt start painting it for like 3 or 4 months! Then again I was rather lazy and this model required barely any preperation beyond the odvious!

Oh and as a side note, since I dont think I have mentioned this, but I am currently working on a second War Mammoth made from a LoTR Elephant (Mumath?)... I had originaly bought it a few years back as an attempted apoc squigoth but now I am greenstuffing fur on it when ever I have left over green stuff when I do other stuff... I will have to post pictures of it at somepoint... I guess you can say its Angkor's mate... I might have to make baby Mammoths and use steggadon rules for em!

Ok well it finally stopped raining (Actually stopped raining this weeked... Saturday I was at GW, Sunday I zoned out and forgot, then the weather was just not good enough to prime in until today!) and I got the main body primed black so I can start painting... I have decided to go with a dark brown for the skin, the black fur, red armor, and a lighter brown (more wood like odviously) for the howda... The more I thought about it, I realized that the pale skin wont look quite right since Im going to highlight the fur a light grey anyways so it would seem a bit off I think... not to mention Id probably fail miserably at pale skin on such a large surface!

OH and theres a size comparison in there for ya luna! Its about the same size from front to back not including tusks... its a bit smaller fat wise and a little lower... however it isnt too small so it should work! As said before... it should make a nice mate for Angkor! Still thinking I need to convert meh some Stegad... I mean baby Mammoths... that use stegadon rules!

-I cant get enough of that that crazy mutated growth thing!

EDIT: Added the pictures since me being the slow that I am, forgot to put them on when I posted the comment

What do you mean striped? I think tiger stripes would just seem extremely odd on a mammoth... how ever you didnt elaborate too much as to where or how so I could just be picturing it wrong. I did however start painting... I have done the front head armour red, although I still need to highlight it and wash some spots again. and have started on the brown skin... and if it means anything, when I post pictures tonight (I have to leave soon so dont got time to upload and post them currently, so Ill do it when I get home) I will take it one step further as the rear is partially painted! MADFTW? (More arese detail for the win? Ok I made that up... although I might just use that throughout the thread haha)

So no need to worry... cause I know how much you love those beautiful arse shots and I plan to obtain more of them throughout the thread for everyone to gander upon!

I love the mammoth, i personally used a mumak for mine, they do great in game, or they get rocked. I have played 5 games 2/5 a giant beat it first round in combat. 2 times, it ran straight through the front lines of the enemy, my sorcer uptop casted mass spells, and the mammoth popped heroes like bad zits, and the last time it took a trebuchet to the skull and started rampaging behind my lines. It only has a 6+ save, and the only thing strong enough is str 5 which ignores the armor anyways.

Ok, sorry for the lack of pictures but the laziness factor is kicking in big time. I will be sure to post pictures tomorrow maybe after Ive painted it a bit more. At the moment the fur looks more grey than black which it actually looks much better with and Im quite happy with the way its comming out. The skin is a dark brown with the scars a tad lighter brown but not too too much. Again, I will post pictures tomorrow as currently my camera is out of power (and Im just really lazy)...

On the contrary, I finally ordered the Forge World Spawn. It was a toss between buying the new minotards next week or ordering the model, and it boiled down to the fact that Id much rather expand on my WoC army since Ive already gone all out on the FW with them anyways, and I wont be starting beastmen for a while anyways so hell, lets get the model that is much better looking and imo more worth the price (well that debatable)... luckily I have my mammoth to keep me busy till it arrives so I dont necesarily need to go nutz waiting for it to arrive like the mammoth. Ill end up painting it a really bright purple or pink (Im thinking pink) so it is slaanesh, giving me a FW model for my WoC of each faction (Tzeentch Dragon, Nurgle Chaos Beast, Khorne Mammoth, and Slaanesh Giant Spawn) which will be rather cool looking... I suppose now Ill have to try for each of the greater daemons? Although I think the Khorne Daemon Prince will be next on the list of FW to get, cause it just look beastly! So just a little bit of excitement here

I promise to post current progress pics tomorrow!

Oh and on another note just real quick, I played in a 5,000 point game against a Night Goblin army today and believe it or not, I got massacred. The first half of the game was horrible and by the second turn, fanatics had killed about 1,300 points of my stuff! Even though I lost, it was by far one of the best games Ive ever played just cause it was so funny, and I think we were planning on doing another 5,000 point game in the future where Ill use my mammoth so that will be equally interesting!

Edit: Heres a picture of the Chaos Spawn I ordered...

I dont think I am, I believe the model comes with a variety of tounge pieces and such, and you can actually give it a different look, the large talon things can be modelled differently and wot not, so Ill probably just make it look slaanesh-y with all the pieces it gives.

On the other hand > I finally took pictures of the mammoth! Im sorry if the pictures arent the best, I tryd to make a bigger photo box thinger so the picture of the head is kind of off, its actually the color you see it in the side views... So as you can see, the fur looks more grey which is awsome anyhow, since the army wonders around the northern wastes, giving it that snowy feel I think. And it definetly looks better against the brown skin and red armour.

This came out rather bad in the picture, the red armour actually looks like it does on the above side pictures...

And as always, it wouldnt be a proper update without taking it even further and giving you some MAD (more arse detail)!
