my local gameshop [ Critical Hit Games ] has taken my old magic cards and given me some store credit. so i need some advice on what to get.

my goal atm is to play Orkz. mainly i want to know what's a better deal - Assault on Black Reach, Ork Battleforce, etc (or buying models separately)

i don't mind the SM in the AoBR box because i can always use those guys for modz on my orkz. (lots of SM heads to be cut off and placed in strategic and embarrassing places)

i'm just a nub atm so any and all advice is appreciated.

thanks in advance!

Since youre new to the game I would definitely get assault on black reach. Gives you a rules book, templates, and some starter orks and some SM to mangle.

Yeah, SM are a great way to get into 40k, because you have almost half a dozen different armies that use the same models more or less. AOBR is a great deal too.

My advice is to find a friend who is also interested in starting the hobby so you can learn together. Also find a veteran to teach you the ropes. Look for the oldest looking person in the store and ask them questions. Most older players are more than happy to take newbies under their wings.

Stick up a note at your gaming store that you'd like to trade your Black Reach marines for somebody's Black Reach orks and you'll have a decent chance at doubling your force. There are more marine players getting started with the box set and having no use for their ork models than the other way around.

Going to nth the Black Reach idea. It's a really good value, and you can trade the Marines for more Orks. If there's nobody in the area, you could even trade for them over the Swap Shop. I advise against using the Marines for battle trophies or whatever, since they're all pretty statically posed, and it will look really, really tacky.

Also, please use proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar in your future posts. It makes things easier for us all.

Welcome to the hobby!

AoBR is definitely the way to go.

After that, start playing with proxies until you figure out what you want to get next. Trukks and Lootas are almost must-haves-- and quite fun!

Hope you have a good time learning to play-- welcome to 40k!

thanks for all the input!

it would appear that the AoBR is a good way to go, especially since i have no other mins atm.

and thanks for all the ideas also: trading the SM for more Orkz, and also playing pieces as proxy.

now it's just a matter of getting in games and painting/modding.

thanks again!
