Anyone with experience playing Planetary Empires, any feedback or advice would be awesome...

"While it is true that there is a very small sub-species of geek who are adept at assembling small figures and painting them with breath taking detail; the rest of us are basically the paste eating retards who failed art class. Because of this, what we build never even faintly resembles the picture on the box when we're done." - Coyote Sharptongue

I was briefly in a GW store campaign using Planetary Empires. It is a good idea, but it does get imbalanced sometimes. I fought a guy who had some building (manufactorum maybe?) and I had none, so he ended up getting 150 more points in a battle. Despite putting up a good fight, I was rocked. Weird things like that happened often. Plus if you don't have a dedicated group, it falls apart. It would be cool to see it run weekend long event, 2-3 days 4-6 people playing, writing a story to go along with it.

Could be a really cool tool for making fantastic campaigns, but requires quite a bit of dedication.

On the other hand, you could probably just make a campaign map (2-d or modeled) and get much of the same effect, making up rules as you go.

I've always wondered about that. What's the planetary empires thing about, anyways? Could someone give me a brief rundown?

It is a set of plastic hexagonal tiles which interlock and can be rearranged nearly endlessly to create a 3D map for a strategic campaign.

The rules included are very skimpy. It basically says, fight a battle of 40K and if you win, you can roll a die to try and take over someone else's tile. What I mean is there is no attempt to locate the tactical forces in the campaign setting.

It is not hard to write expanded rules for a campaign. I got half-way through writing a set myself before I got distracted.

The tiles themselves are fun and paint up nicely.

The Hive City tiles are extra -- a pair costs about £6. It's worth having one Hive City set as a major objective if you are playing a 'real' campaign.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
