Ever since I made my comeback to 40k, I've wanted an IG list. Over the past few months, I've been 'secretly' collecting and assembling various IG models but not really having anything resembling an army. I think the time has come that I put a list together and I'd like some insight or advice from those of you out there who are more experienced at this than I am.

At the moment I've got:
Valkyrie Vendetta x3
Sentinels x3
Cadian Shock Troops Box x3
Kasrkin Squad
Leman Russ Battle Tank.

I want to go tank / armor heavy and am thinking about adding three Hellhounds and another five Leman Russ Battle Tanks.

With a Platoon Command Squad, I think that will take me close to 2000 points.

I'm a bit confused as to what I need to field for the troops requirement. Is it simply just a Command Squad and two units of infantry?

for troops you can either take 2 units of veterans.

1 Platoon command squad and at least 2 Platoon squads + 1 Platoon command squad and at least 2 Platoon squads.

1 Platoon command squad and at least 2 Platoon squads + 1 unit of Veterans

1 Platoon command squad and at least 2 Platoon squads + 1 unit of penal legionnaires

1 unit of Veterans + 1 unit of penal legionnaires

2 units of penal legionaires.

For this option - does this mean that the two scoring units are:

1. Platoon Command and 2 Platoon Squads
2. Unit of Veterans?

no you have 4 scoring units: Platoon command squad, each platoon squad, and the veteran squad.

or 3 if you blob the 2 platoon squads.

each element of a platoon is an individual unit; these units are also all scoring(unless it is a chimera) also each element is worth 1 Kill point(which you can mitigate by "blobbing")

Ya 4 scoring units, 2 troop selections with that example.

So you've got 30 men? If you got 4 chimeras you could field 2 vets and 2 CCS. 20 scoring squishies is a real low count at 2000 pts though. I think you've got the basics for a good list, you can pretty much play as is. If you want to go tank/armour heavy that usually means chimeras (mechanized) for your troops, and you've got to decide b/t vets and platoons. The objectives mean troops are pretty important.

The other option is to go hybrid, (have a bit of a gunline) and then you have to fill out your gunline a bit. What kind of armaments for your infantry do you have, anyways?

I haven't put any infantry together yet.

But, I've officially have now:

30 Cadian Shock Troops.
10 Cadian Kasrkins.
Command Squad.
Commissar w/Power Fist.
Two Valkyries w/Rocket Pods, Multi-laser, Heavy Bolter
Two Vendetta Gunships w/ three Twin-linked Las Cannons.
Two Leman Russ Battle Tanks w/Battle Cannon, Las Cannon and Heavy Bolter Sponsons.
One Leman Russ Executioner w/Plasma Cannon Sponsons.
Three Hellhounds w/Multi Meltas.

At the moment - I've only got one Chimera. I'm thinking I will have to get some more when the new kit comes out.

So that leads me to another question, though, I can skip/ignore Platoon Command Squads altogether?

Only if you take veterans. Platoon Command Squads are mandatory if you want regular infantry squads. You've got lots of vehicles, I'd say more chimeras would be good but you should probably get more troops too...
