So, as far as I'm concerned Kaze No Tani no Naausica is the finest comic ever produced.
I felt withdrawl symptoms waiting for Deathnote volumes.
Was not impressed with Yotsuba.
Dragon Head was scary and creepy for 5 or 6 books and then just got depressing.
Battle Angel Alita is the comic Mozart would write given a chance.
Battle Angel Alita Last Order is like the original's idiot nephew but I keep buying it anyway.

I gave the first 6 volumes of Claymore a shot and found them good but slow and repetative. Not sure I want to go in for another 10+ books of it.

Got the first book of Pluto and found it good but not interested enough to order vol 2.

Same with the first book of Monster.

Anyone care to make a recommendation for manga for grownups?

Pluto really picks up. Keep going with it. While it's not manga I would also suggest picking up Niel Gaimens sandman series.

Sandman's covered man.

One of these days I'll have to post pics of my wall of TPBs. Suffice to say if its American and worth reading I've read it.

20th Century Boys.

I'm surprised you didn't like Monster, however as the story changes in vol.2 it may be worth taking a look at.

The problem about Monster is that a couple of the volumes are OOP and hard to get hold of.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

FLCL is an amazing 2 volumes, and Squee's Big Book Of Unspeakable Horrors makes for some amusing reading, though it's not manga.

Y, The Last Man was decent, Preacher was alright, and I want a damn TRANSMETROPOLITAN movie already....

Things I've gotten other players to admit...

A transmet movie would cost a loooot of money to make.

So? Take a Michael Bay sized budget and put it in the hands of someone who could actually do it justice.

They made LOTR, didn't they?

Lord of the rings had a large established fanbase and a franchise pedigree. Transmet is reletively unknown, it would require a bigname director to actually read the book and demand it be made.

They made Hellblazer into a movie.... a half-assed movie, but a movie nonetheless, and it was relative unknown to the mass market.

I would highly recommend gantz. Read the first few, and you'll be hooked.

Gantz is quite good. Very strange and very graphic, but good.

I HIGHLY recommend Berserk by Kentaro Miura. It is quite easily my favorite series. I would argue that it's still one of the best series being produced today. It's what Claymore wishes it could be.

Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue is a beautifully drawn fictionalization of the life of Musashi, the legendary Japanese swordsmen.

Blade of the Immortal by Hiraoki Samura is another beautifully drawn ronin story set in Edo-Era (IIRC) Japan.

I assume you already read all the mainstream WSJ stuff?

If you liked Deathnote then you'll probably like Code Geass.
FLCL for sure.
Saikano is quite full-on if you like the whole 'mecha girl' thing.
Neon Genesis, in case you've been living under a rock

You brighten my life like a polystyrene hat, but it melts in the sun like a life without love, and I've waited for you so I'll keep holding on without you.

WSJ? Wall Street Journal?

No safe to assume I am not up on it.

FLCL (I spent an age trying to figure out what it stands for before I found out it stands for nothing) looks like a companion to an anime I never saw. Is it any good or is it just wacky?

I read Gantz #1 in Japanese and liked it, maybe I should pick it up. I saw the Neon Genesis anime and found it meh. Nice fights but the characters were the same 'oh I'm so alientated from modern society' whiners Japan has been spitting out since the Meiji restoration. Plus a whole lot of BS dressed up as deep symbolism. Not sure I could put up with them in print form.

If you read Japanese I really recommend Mad Bull (never translated AFAIK) it's an 80s action book set in the sort of NYC an 80s Japanese person feared. Y'know people getting shot on every street corner, alley cats with shotguns tied to their necks being uses as assasssins, mob bosses the size of gorillas... Lots of fun. Looking forward to picking up more of it when I go back this month.

I found Code Geass OTT and exaggerated. And I loved Death Note.

I liked Gantz because it was gritty, realistic, and had a lot of underlying philosophical points.

A 'slice of life' comedy in which Jesus Christ and Buddha rent a cheap apartment together in some suburb of Tokyo, as a holiday after their Millenial exertions.

Don't go in expecting a coherent storyline, but the character development is good and the animation is top notch. It's really just a purified coming of age story with wacky gak layered in.

I found Code Geass OTT and exaggerated
Code Geas was just an excuse for big robots and bunny girl suits to be in the same series. The story was awful.

I liked Gantz because it was gritty, realistic, and had a lot of underlying philosophical points.
...

Saying gantz was realistic and philosophical is similar to saying that you enjoyed spongebob for the accurate portrayal of the ocean bottom and small business economics. Gantz is nothing but murderporn (with regular porn).

Without giving too much away on Gantz, it's come to grips with some very issues I took in my philosophy classes in college. I'd say what they were, but I wouldn't want to ruin the story.

As to realism, I must admit, I started off with the dub, which had the people speaking in a realistic way (for example, when something shocking happened they went 'WTF?'), and I think the characters behave in a far more realistic and human way than those of Bleach, Naruto, FMA, Evangelion, etc. That very human way in which they interacted with each other, and responded to events that threatened their lives made me empathise with them on a level I would never get with any of the characters of Code Geass, or One piece.

Since it's quite a long series, if you stuck with it despite not grasping the underlying principles, that must mean 'murderporn' is what you enjoy anyway. Inw hich case it's no surprise to me the subtler elements bypassed you completely. And if you haven't read the whole series, then to be frank, your opinion means squat, and you're just trolling.

It only needs two characters. Jesus and Buddha make a good duo.

Many Japanese sects regard Buddha as practically divine, which isn't true in the strictest sense. Meanwhile Jesus is the Son of God and less 'awful' in the true sense than God Himself.

Both died fairly young unlike Mohammed, and make good studenty type characters.

Islam, while not unknown in Japan, has much less penetration into the national consciousness. There have been Christians in Japan for over 400 years.

I think the comment was meant to reflect that Islam forbids imagery of the prophet Mohammed . I recall some Dutch cartoonist was in some hot water 'cause of it.

Aye. Jin hit it on the head. You'd have people burning his manga up and down the middle east and the japanese embassy attacked if he had.

Probably, you just listed six shows designed for the 8-14 year old demographic featuring giant robots, ninjas, pirates with silly gum arms, and ghosts.

Since it's quite a long series, if you stuck with it despite not grasping the underlying principles, that must mean 'murderporn' is what you enjoy anyway.

I didn't stick with it. The first few books (and the series as well) are really just murderporn with a "oh look at how gritty this all is" angle. If they tried to turn that into something else good for them, but the series and the show are looked upon poorly for a reason.

Inw hich case it's no surprise to me the subtler elements bypassed you completely.

Or, more likely, they were so simplistic, hamfisted, and gritty that they failed to do much to raise the series above the murderporn genre that it rests in. Evangellion tried to screw around with religion and philosophy and these days people just know it as the big weird robot show with that redhead. Gantz is just the skintight bodysuit series where peoples heads explode and people get raped a lot.

I note muhammed fails to make an appearance in that manga. I wonder why?

He's a prophet, he wouldn't fit with a godlike savior and the first Buddha.

And if you like sci-fi like Alita , here are 2 very good one as well.
It doesnt have same mood as Alita , but it convey a very believable yet vast futuristic environment.

Maybe the Danish cartoon incident had some interesting outside factors. First up the cartoonists did it as a provocation to say 'no more kid gloves for Islam'. Secondly there were some Muslim clerics in Denmark who were looking for proof that Muslims there are being oppressed, and harassed.

The riots and protests happened months after the fact and were planned by expat groups.

This is why those cartoons got such a reaction but say the Faith Fighters game someone linked to (where Mohammed is a playable character) did not.

In other words, you're like someone who shouts about a book being crap because he didn't like the first few chapters? I'll admit the plot took a little while to set up, but to be frank here, it's worth getting further in. Since you've admitted you only read the first few of a vast series almost as big as the long running Bleach, I can safely conclude you actually don't know enough about the series to have an opinion worth caring about.

Well, whatever. I'm not one of those rabid fanboys who'll jump up and down and foam at the mouth. All I can say is its your loss, as it really is a good storyline.

I would recommend Black Lagoon very highly incidentally.

As to Danish cartoons, that may be the case. Over here, the media blew it up into a big thing about how no-one was allowed to print images of muhammed in any context, but I'll take that with a pinch of salt. It is the media after all.
