Hallo

I am planning of starting a Republican Rome army, and wondering which rule set is better/easier in your opinion, Wab or Field of Glory?

Cheers Arran.

I have played both but only a little (and neither with Romans) -- I find that WAB is a bit more flavourful but I think that FOG might be the better game (in terms of tactics) once you get familiar with it.

I don't either are particularly difficult but FOG does seem different enough from other games that it takes a few plays to "get it".

I've been playing WAB for about 2 years now & having previous experience with GW games will make it easy to play WAB. The Hannibal army book contains a full army list for Republican Rome - all the army stats and back ground you'll need to get started.

All I've heard about FOG comes from discussions at TMP. It seems to be a rather figity game along the lines of DBA. Some folks seem to really like that sort of game - but nothing I've read makes it appealing to me.

Finally - what scale are you building in? WAB uses the 28mm scale. FOG runs both, but most people seem to favor 15mm scale.

You may also want to consider Impetus, which I personally find much better than either WAB or FOG.

They also offer a simplified version of the rules for free (appropriately called Basic Impetus), so you can take a look and decide whether it's your cup of tea.

Another important point to note is that Basic Impetus (the free version) is fully playable by itself, and hundreds of army lists are freely available for download on their official website.

I come from playing all GW games since Rogue Trader.

Field of Glory was the first Ancients game I tried.
I really enjoyed the difference between the mechanics of the game and 40k, WHFB, Warmachine, and Flames of War.
If you play the army the way that it historically fought, you are likely to get a positive result.
Movement feels more fluid than WHFB to me.
If you plan your deployment well, a few shifts here and there can change your whole attack angle.

I have also played ACW, Napoleonics, and American Revolution rulesets.
Field of Glory is by far my favorite.

I have noticed that Warhammer Ancients feels like playing Empire Vs Empire, but that may be the era we play.

OK, I never played FoG but it looks terribly complicated with far too many rules. My mates that played FoW said the same, that game is really slow because of it... so what are your opinions? My only problem with WAB is that army lists seem to be quite poor comparing to FoG, but then again, than can be easily fixed.

FoG looks complicated, but many of the rules are special-case, they are showing how to clear up the weird stuff that can happen when formations are at odd angles, differing troops, etc.

Once you have played it, you will realize that a lot of the stuff doesn't come up in the average game.

I have not found FoG or FoW to be any slower than a 1500pt game of 40k.

FoG's rule book isn't well laid out but once you have played a game or two it runs pretty smoothly. In my experience FoG games don't run any slower than 40K.

I would also have to say that if you want to play ancients, playing FoG in the 15mm scale gives a better feel for massed formations of soldiers than 28mm. 28s are really only good for skirmish level games (IMO) although you can play FoG in 28 if you like.

(You also have the option of playing 6mm or 10mm based as 15 if you really want your army to look massive.)

For 10mm there is warmaster ancients which is apparently pretty good (I only play warmaster fantasy so far and its good!)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
do you know any other good ancient rules for 28mm?

I hear that Basic Impetus is a good rules set, but I haven't played it.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Warmaster Ancients works fine for 15mm too, you just have fewer figures per base. The rules use the standard WRG base widths so you can use any army made for WRG Ancients, DBX or FoG.

Generally speaking, Ancients mass battle rules define a unit or element as a particular size of base. The number of figures on the base is an abstraction, so any scale can be used.

Baccus 6mm offer army packs which use the standard 25mm scale bases but put 48 x 6mm figures on the base instead of the usual 4 x 25/28mm figures.

I'm experimenting with DBA using 2mm figures.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
