Is it good/ bad to use spray paint as a base coat for plastic models?

Well, you can use a Spray Primer to get your models ready to be painted but Spraying on an Enamel i think is not a good thing since its rather slick nothing would really want to stick to it. Just Prime it grey or black or white and then use the Citadel paints from there.

Use acrylic to prime.

Easier for paint to stick
Easier to strip if something goes wrong.

For the love of god don't use gloss enamels. They make everything turn into garbage, and paint won't stick. Krylon and Armory both make good spray primers. You can find Krylon at your local hardware store, and a lot of hobby shops carry Armory. They're both good stuff.
