Hey guys, this is a more or less pointless thread, just wanted to draw attention to a conundrum I find myself in regarding selecting an army in WHFB. It's a real Gordian knot situation, but I'm only posting it for the laughs, really.

Here's the problem:
* I would like to play a more-or-less good guy-centric army, so that rules out Vampire Counts, Tomb Kings, Beastmen, Warriors of Chaos, Daemons of Chaos and Dark Elves.
* All except Skaven, who I really like very much, and WOULD play, but:
* I play Orks in 40k and I don't want another horde army (this also rules out Orcs & goblins). Perhaps Lizardmen?
* I like Lizardmen but my girlfriend is scared of lizards (seriously). So, how about the Elven races then? They're good guys, not horde, look fantastic...
* Elves = nice, but... Legoli (what's the plural of Legolas? Legoli?). It would feel too much like painting mini Orlando Blooms (no offence). Anyway, how about Dwarfs?
* My girlfriend is scared of midgets, so no Dwarfs (btw, I wish I was making this up). On to Ogres.
* Ogres are a definite possibility. But... I don't REALLY like them THAT much.
* Brettonians are AWESOME but... French.
* Empire are nice, but give me a gut-feeling of 'no'. They're seem like the WHFB Space Marines.
* Well, how about... oh wait that's everyone. Whoops.

Wait what?

Anyway Empire seem to be like a hoarde army as well, from my understanding there is no army like Space Marines in WHFB.

Did you include Wood Elves? If you don't really like Elves you could have an entire army made of tree people.

dude i mean no offence but i dont think that you should choose an army based on your girlfriends dislikes.
anyway i would recommend dwarves or elves (any of the two races).
even though i play high elves, i would consider taking dwarves. they are just so awesome.

As a married man, I have to say I disagree, and agree with the OP's thinking. Having an army that your significant other is scared of is not only mean to her (since you spend lots of time together and she's bound to encounter the things a lot) but also pretty unwise as far as having her encourage you in your little hobby of toy soldiers! My wife is visibly shaken up by the warhammer daemons... don't ask me why, but that army won't ever be an option for me, whether I would like it to be personally or not. My assuring her of that has warmed her up to the hobby considerably.

That said, I'd totally recommend wood elves, but I'm biased- I play them . However, I run an all-forest spirit army... the only elves in it are wildriders, and they're no orland blooms! The rest are trees, tress and more trees- little ones (dryads), medium ones (treekin), and big ones (treeman). It's pretty viable, and a lot of fun. A great option!

Brettonia also sounds like a great fit for you... I also am turned off by Empire, for the same space-marines-of-fantasy feeling (even if that's a little off/unfair to Empire, it's there for those of us switching from 40k). Let us know what you decide to go with!

Thanks guys just posted for the laughs really but appreciate the feedback. @ RiTides: you speak the truth! BTW Wood Elves are on the short list along with Skaven, Brettonians and Orcs & Goblins. But will do the smart thing and wait for 8th before commiting.

Hi Orky

Re Brettonians
Rather than being French they are more celtic stock
Seriously AFAIK, the real Bretons consider themselves closer to Cornish in terms of ethnicity than French. Any case Debussy and Braque were French so that is good enough for me

I'm a sucker for Arthurian mythology and considered them myself. But got the Skull Pass set and Woodies for my daughter. Unlike Ritides it has a lot of Elves. They are rather nice and the wardancers are cool imho

Empire puts me off too! There is something creepy and authoritarian about them. (Not flaming just a personal opinion and no offence meant towards Empire players)

Maybe that their swordsmen and the like look like hillbillies still in their pajamas?

Empire is so devastating as a shooting army. They can bring 4 cannons, 2 hellblasters, as many wizards as possible, and loads and loads of crossbowmen, with the almost required 2 big blocks of swordsmen to protect your stuff.

That can wipe certain armies off the table in 2-3 turns. it's scary.

Wait 'till 8th edition until committing? That will be 2+ months, hope your patient.

Fun Fact: Its not even confirmed, though its highly unlikely its not to be released soon, GW hasn't released ANYTHING concrete about it.

My buddy at the FLGS says he was told to expect 8th within 2 or 3 months. I think they're trying to get as much word-of-mouth hype going as they can before officially confirming the release, however it will be here soon.
