First stab at a 1500 Ork List:
HQ
Ghazkull Thraka
Big Mek with PK and KFF
Troops
27 Ard Boyz + Nob /w PK & BP (This’ll be GT’s mob)
19 Boyz + Nob /w PK & BP
19 Shoota Boyz + Nob /w PK and BP
Elites
10 Burnas (this’ll be the Big Mek’s mob)
HS
1 Deff Dread /w 2 additional CC weapons
3 Killa Kans /w Skorchas
1 Battlewagon /w red paint job, riggers, 2 big shootas. This’ll be for trucking the burnas and mek around.
The plan is (obviously!) to get into CC as quickly as possible with everyone. The wagon will get the burnas up field quickly and drop them nearby any ‘tender’ pieces of opposition and hopefully the BM’s KFF and the wagon’s armour will make sure they get there in a good state.
Whadya reckon?

Good luck getting the Big Mek to swing. Without an invul save and being a independent char, he will most likely die before using his PK. For the same pts you can give him a burna and hvy armour - which will help some.
Ghaz is in Mega-amour - so the entire mob of hard boys will be moving SP. If you want Ghaz to get in combat - get him a BW.
You may run into problems with the mek in the burna wagon. It will outpace the rest of you force which leaves them by themselves and also moves his KFF awar from the rest of you troops and walkers.
I think skorchas on Kans are a waste. If you're that close you can assault. And if you use the Skorchas your adversary will pull troops that are closest to your Kans first - likely denying you the assault. Big shootas on Kans are great - multiple shots, decent str, great range.

I personally am a big fan of the kan wall with KFF. You just march them up as a big ole wall with your boyz behind them. From what I've seen its a pretty effective strategy and it's pretty much how you said you wanted to play.

I would put rokkits on the kans to get some ranged anti armor and anti MC weapons.
I'm not positive on Ghaz's rules but he is a bit expensive for this list. One of my friends who plays orks never takes him in a list less than 2000 points and swears by that.

Alright, you have two good ideas as to what you want to do, BUT there are a few things that should be done to re-tool the list to go either route.
If you going to stick with Ghaz as your HQ, this should be what you should do:
Remove the Deff Dread and Killa Kans as well as the 'ard Boyz.
Add Two Battlewagons with a few upgrades; nothing too expensive: Grot Riggers, Armor Plates, RPJ, Big Shoota are all decent.
Add in a few 5 man Loota squads/Deff Koptas from the AOBR set with Buzzsaws attached as single unit squads.
This is needed for your list as you will lack long range fire support.
Throw in some trukk boyz if you have spare points.
Give the Bik Mek a scorcha (to replace PK) as someone mentioned, and maybe cybork, but at 1500, it is a tight list.
If you go the Kan Wall route-
Remove Ghaz and the Battlewagon and Burnas.
Add in an extra Big Mek with KFF and another Dread and six Kans.
Change all weapons on Kans to rokkit launchas.
Maybe a smallish unit of grots (minimum size) for coming out of reserve to grab your objective as everything else slogs foward.
Remove the Big Mek's PK and give both Big Meks a scorcha.
The non 'ard boyz squad should be turned into shootas.

Thanks for the advice, guys; plenty there to think about. I'm edging more towards dropping Ghaz and taking the extra KFF and the heavy support at the moment. Ghaz will have to wait for a 2000 pt force
In danger of sounding stupid here but are Shootas and Lootas worth the points, then?
