I'm experimenting with this idea. You take three naked nobs and a dedicated deff rolla battlewagon. With 'Ard case, red paint, grot riggers, armor plates, 1 big shoota, the unit cost works out to be
210. I'm running two of these as elites and nine kans in my heavy slots. Not sure if the 210 points could be better spent though...

I've seen a guy in Austin run the same Nob unit in his list except they were supporting a Nob Biker squad, deff koptas and truck boys. It worked extremely well for him. He would either hammer one big guy with both units of Mega Armor Nobs or he'd use them to support the truck boyz hitting a bigger unit or to take out small MEQ units. With two wounds and 2+ armor, those three guys are pretty survivable as long as they aren't exposed to mass powerfists in assault.

After running some battlewagon lists, I really don't like this idea.
Panzer - he's taking naked nobs, not mega-nobs, btw.
Three nobs might, possibly, contribute in some small way to an existing combat. But they're really not worth anything on their own. So, that's 60 points that could be spent better.
The battlewagons you list have a lot of upgrades, and are still vulnerable to flank shots. Grot riggers can re-mobilize you, but they won't keep you from losing that turn's movement, and after that one gun is gone, the chances of getting immobilized go way up.
I think that part of the strength of the battlewagon is its transport capacity. If you're not utilizing that, you're losing a big part of the package.

I'd put in decent nob or meganob units, making what's inside the wagon actually useful. Ard case, red paint job and riggers are all adding point sthat could be spent elsewhere IMO. If anything, a PK on a nob and a boarding plank seem like a much better investment...

I run roller wagons as the equivalent of a meltasquad. They're already a huge target as it stands and I never was much for deathstar units.
Small Meganob squads are nice for supporting in a multicharge, if you can use cheaper units to pull away Powerfist attacks.

Upon further reflection I think for 210 points and elite slot 14 lootas might be more useful.

I too was going to use a minimal Nob squad in a Rolla
wagon, but I decided to switch to Lootas, wich are better, except they can't take out LR's. Thats all you lose.

If you are running two warbosses, it might not be a bad deal since you could make your rolla wagon scoring with the three nobs cowering inside. A battle wagon takes a lot of shots to kill if you can keep the flanks reasonably safe, and even if it pops the nobs can always go to ground on the objective.
Not really ideal, but if you want the wagon for support it makes it more reasonable.

Deffrollas need to run right up to an enemy in order to use it. Lootas are better as they only need LOS and be within 4 feet to use their massed firepower, which is good versus anything not AV 14.

Correct. Nevertheless, the Battlewagon does its part to serve as insurance against Land Raiders or to project a zone of "Do not move your vehicles here."
