I just got the Flames of War L4 miniature and I have decided that is probably smaller than I would like for a plane that is going to stay on the table.

The 1/144 minis being used to mark airstrikes don't really bother me because they are not on the table for too long.

So, does anyone know of any manufacturers of 1/100 L4 Grashoppers?

gah, I fear your logic has infected me. I have an L4 waiting to be painted some day but now the same niggling thought is eating away at my brain!

The model is... uh... smaller because it's high?

Since it's basically a marker, I'd probably go with the smaller mini myself, but that's just me. And I don't really play FoW, so what do I know?

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

QRF do a Westland Lysander in the appropriate size.

It's not a Grasshopper but it's very close. If you're doing British or Canadians it's probably more appropriate.

The planes used to indicate airstrikes are basically markers (and since you can have up to 3 at one point, having full-scale 15mm planes can take up a lot of space) but the Observation planes stay on the the table like a regular unit so I find that the "smallness" becomes more noticeable.

I have never really understood the "smaller because it is higher" argurment. That would make sense if the model was suspended above me and I was looking up at it. But if I am looking through (or past) the plane at the ground troops the plane should actually be bigger to give an illusion of altitude.

Was the Lysander used for artillery observation throughout the war? I thought they had a different plane towards the end (but I really haven't paid much attention to observation planes prior to now)

Apparently it was replaced by the Auster in '41. I don't know anyone who makes an Auster in 1:100.

The problem is that there are few 'model based' (i.e. games where actual models drive the rules rather than just indicate front line action.) WWII games in 15mm. Thus there are few manufacturers of artillery and similar 'off table' assets.

I admit it's a little iffy, but the 'official' FoW models for these ship with a flight stand that is, what, a couple of inches? In-scale,t hat's like maybe 20-30 feet high? Seems a little low for an aircraft... So I guess the thought is that 'scale' is traded for making the flight stand a height that is actually usable in-game.

I admit it's all kind of weird.

I think the official FoW models were bought cheap from a third party manufacturer. I'm not a fan of out of scale stuff either.

@Aldramelech: No problem mate.
