What's so bad about the game? (Help me make my sanity check!)
Well, it all depends on personal preference really, but for me the game lacked any reall interest. I may as well be playing a card game or a board game, rather than using miniatures. It's probably no better nor worse than any "clix" game, but the rules are minimal - not in itself a bad thing, look at chess after all, but unlike "traditional" wargames there is no "character" to the game. You are pushing around a random collection of monsters fighting another random collection of monsters with a few limted differences in methods of attacking and killing. There are one or two more advanced scenarios, but they aren't that advance. The main game is "paper, scissors, stones" with little plastic dolls. None of the things that are good about a wargame - such as "combined arms", range considerations, etc. It really is more of a board game than a tabletop game as such.
Fair enough for a bit of fun one rainy afternoon, but frankly I'd rather spend my money on something with some more staying power. Think "board game" rather than "wargame" and you'll get what I'm talking about. The difference is that with a boardgame you get everything n the box. With clix games you either have random packaging issues or pay silly money on eBay for "game winning" models (or even worse, don't and face an opponent who has done that and get hammered into the ground - just like with Magic and other
CCG's)
Of course this could just be the rantings of a bitter old man against two of his pet peeves - plastic models and "collectible" (for which read "rip-off sales tactics"
games.
Using the (admittedly rather nicely sculpted) minis for some other, more traditional, games. Now that's a different story!
