Oh let’s see... I picked up a copy of Warhammer Fantasy Battle 2nd edition (back when you could field Amazons with Boltguns and GW encouraged you to play with cardboard counters) in 1986 and fell in love with the hobby. Went to Gamesday ’87 in London and was one of the first persons in line to buy Rogue Trader. (Everyone says that was in October, but I swear it was early August. I remember I had just come into birthday money...)
Anyway, played both games ever since, although primarily 40k. Along the way, I’ve played Blood Bowl (until the BBRC drove me out of that), Necromunda, Space Hulk, Fury of Dracula, Talisman, Golden Heroes, Judge Dredd: RPG, Mighty Empires, Man O’War, Gorkamorka, Dark Future, Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb, Chainsaw Warrior… you name it, if it’s a GW game I’ve played it.
Before I moved stateside, I had several large 40k armies and several Adeptus Titanicus/Space Marine armies. Had to sell them rather than transport them though.
Been rebuilding my forces ever since. I’ve built, played and later sold a large IG force. I know run an IG force and a Tau army.
My current situation with 40k and the whole of GW is... pissed off but accepting. Most of the time I want to leave “the hobby” but I keep getting drawn back to the game despite GW’s gakky treatment of it’s loyal customers. The reason why I never fully leave is because there isn’t a comparable game out there.
As much as I moan about 40k, no other game can offer all of the big four: easy/quick ruleset; good miniatures; availiblity; and players. I tried Warmachine/Hordes and although I love the minis and there are plenty of players out there, the rules are not to my taste (too much like a CCG for me). SST has great rules but no players and godawful minis. Confrontation has beautiful minis but iffy rules. Flames of War looks promising but the 15mm is a downer and no one plays it around here.
Currently building up a WarGods of Aegyptus force though. Great game, good rules, beautiful minis. No players though.
So 40k will always be there until something better comes along.

AM ... I can tell you that our local game shops, as well as the ones down in NC are losing wall space for GW, and replacing it with others.
Whereabouts in NC? In the Triangle, of the four big FLGS: two are around 50% GW, 30% PP, 20% everything else and always have been; one is almost 100% GW and always has been; and one is almost 100% PP and always has been.
Nothing's changed around here, not in the last six years or so.
