Agreed Deadshane. If I take DW, I take one squad and maybe one squad of RW. I also have always been taking a Pred Destructor or two. It's amazing how much attention my oppenents give it (for only 100 VPs! Haha).

I've been having problems vs. Orks lately, but I attribute that to my own inexperience vs. horde armies. Every game I get a bit better, but my friend's KoS still wipes the floor with my DA.

I think that 5th ed will be a boon for DA. And when the SM codex gets it's rumored tone-down we'll see the DA on more equitable footing.

Flamethrowers, Whirlwinds, and Dreadnoughts are all very handy against Orks. The Whirlwinds are particularly nice against the Kult of Speed because they can't hide behind terrain waiting to jump you.

Taking a Sacred Standard will also make your line squads Fearless so that they can take a charge from the Orks, and then wipe them out in the next Assault Phase (or hold them up for reinforcements, like a Dreadnought).

Yeah, I'll have to start taking a Whilrwind again. Haven't taken that in a few years. Sammael in Speeder has done well, Orks don't have much that can hurt AV14. I need either mobile/indirect firepower to destroy his trukks and strand his boyz or enough Counter-assault so I can take the first hit then assault in my turn. I'll figure it out, it's working it in to a "take-all" army that can also take on Tyranids and MEQ that I'm gonna struggle with.

But that's part of the fun.

Some obvious choices would include an Assault squad, Company Veterans, or even a Command squad.

command squad is AWESOME with Azrael leading it. To some lesser extent so is a veteran squad.

A Command squad is awesome, and less fragile when Azrael is leading it, but a Veteran squad can be bigger and meaner (though considerably more expensive). Plus you can toughen them up with the addition of Combat Shields and Storm Shields.

Here's one Company Veteran Squad:

Sergeant: Combi-Weapon, Combat Shield
Two Veterans: Combi-Weapons, Combat Shield
Two Veterans: Chainsword, Combat Shield
Vet. Specialist #1: Flamethrower, Storm Shield
Razorback w/Twin-Linked Heavy Bolters, Extra Armour

Here's another:
Sergeant: Combi-Weapon, Combat Shield
Two Veterans: Storm Bolters, Combat Shields
One Veterans: Bolter, Combat Shield
Vet. Specialist #1: Plasma Gun, Storm Shield
Vet. Specialist #2: Lascannon, Storm Shield
Razorback w/Twin-Linked Lascannons, Extra Armour

A Third:
Sergeant: Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield
Two Veterans: Power Weapons, Combat Shields
One Veteran: Chainsword, Combat Shield
Vet. Specialist #1: Melta Gun, Storm Shield
Four Veterans: Bolters
Vet. Specialist #2: Lascannon
Razorback w/Twin-Linked Lascannons, Extra Armour

If I want to go HtH I go Command with Azrael's standard and Azrael. Only 2 power weapons in the squad yet its still 10 basic str 4 power weapon attacks on the charge, plus Azrael himself gets 7. Unfortunatly the Command squad cannot bring a Champion with only Azrael in the army (???) Shame, 15 power weapon attacks would be glorious.

For shooting I opt for the vet squad, Azrael's combi-plasma, plus the units 2 combi-plasma and a plasma gun = 8 plasma shots in one turn, the third special weapon goes to a fist for some close combat luvin against any survivers that decide to charge.

Uh, where are you getting the number 10 from? The Veterans with Power Weapons would have 2 basic, +1 for the Pistol & Power Weapon combo, +1 for the charge. That would be 8 in total. Likewise the Champion would only add four more attacks on the charge, though 12 is pretty decent.

The Company Veteran squad could also take a Plasma Cannon or a Lascannon for cheap.

Could a list like this work? 1500 points.

Master
jump pack, lightning claws, meltabombs

3 x 10 marines
melta, powerfist, rhino

5 assault marines
powerfist

2 x 10 devastators
4 missile launchers, lascannon razorback

I'm interested to know how Ravenwing works, for those of you who play DA. I'm looking at different armies right now, and one iteration of Marines I was thinking about was a primarily RW list.

Sammael in Speeder

Maybe some scout squads to infiltrate forward for some midrange shooting

2 Full Bike Squads + Landspeeders

3 Speeders

2 Predators

Would that be a decent build? I really like the idea of having a highly mobile, fast list, with a good bit of midrange firepower from the Scouts and Bikes, with tons of antipersonnel coming from the Preds and 6 speeders. I'm just not sure if it's a solid build, even if the bikes were decked out to hunt tanks.

Thoughts on the list?

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person, who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

I get 10 attacks thanx to Azrael's standard that he can add for the Standard bearer.

2 attacks base, + 1 for pistol & power weapon combo, +1 for charge, +1 for Standard Bearer = 5 attacks on the charge

This is a list that I have been using for DA. Very fire power based but it has a lot of tactical flexability with the combat squad rules.

HQ:
Commander @ 150 (Lighning Claws, Jump Pack)

Elite:
Vet Squad 9 @ 250 (2 PF, 1 PW, 1 Flamer)

Troops:
Tac Squad 10 @ 210 (1 PF, 1 Plasma Cannon, 1 Flamer)
Rhino @ 35

Tac Squad 10 @ 210 (1 PF, 1 Plasma Cannon, 1 Flamer)
Rhino @ 35'

Tac Squad 10 @ 210 (1 PW, 1 Plamsa Cannon, 1 Plasma Gun)

Heavy:
Dev Squad 5 @ 195 (3 Lascannons)

Dev Squad 5 @ 195 (3 Lascannons)

Dev Squad 10 @ 225 (4 Heavy Bolters)

Total: 1750

This is a very good gun line army. I have a lot of fire power. At the same time I have versatility with my Tac squads to be able to run up with the rhinos and take objectives.

The Commander has a jump pack so that he can go and reenforce the line if something gets to it. The vet are a great unit which can take on anything. In a bigger points game I would probably run Azreal with them.

This list has worked well for me. It is very balanced but has a lot of punch if played right.

Tactical Squad 90

Predator Destructor 70
Heavy Bolters 25

Storm Bolter 5

Storm Bolter 5

Predator Destructor 70
Heavy Bolters 25
Storm Bolter 5

For a total of 1500 pts.

Pretty much you hold the line with your heavy tanks and then rush out with your Razorbacks for either counter assault or on turn 5 for objective grabbing, putting Azrael on one objective and the two tac squads on another.
